Citizen of a New Planetary Imaginary
Results from a workshop led by @retinaa.ch

During this workshop, students explored new ways of imagining identity beyond political borders, adopting a planetary and more-than-human perspective.

Each student selected a territory and investigated it as a living biome, observing its species, cycles, seasons, rhythms, geological memory, and data.

These explorations were translated into visual languages and graphic systems, expressing a sense of belonging not to a nation, but to a living ecosystem.

The final outcomes were printed using Risograph, bringing these new visual identities to life through layers of colour, texture, and experimentation.

TALKS — Visual Knowledge × @retinaa.ch

We are excited to welcome RETINAA, who will be leading a workshop with the first-year MAVK students. Founded by Carl Guilhon and Guillaume Peitrequin in 2016, RETINAA is a Geneva-based creative studio working at the intersection of art, design, and technology. Their practice spans brand identities, products, campaigns, packaging, and experiences, working with clients ranging from global technology companies and luxury brands to agencies and independent artists.

Over time, RETINAA has developed an international reputation for its work in security design, crafting state-of-the-art passports and identity documents, banknotes and specimens, as well as brand protection systems. Working closely with leaders in the security industry, the studio develops research-based solutions and provides design consultancy to governments, high-security printers, and technology suppliers.

During this talk, RETINAA will share insights into their multidisciplinary practice and the research, design methodologies, and technologies that shape their work.

Serious Game in Environmental Health, Commission with the Geneva School of Health Sciences (HEdS), Design in Context with Tamara Niklaus and Alice Franchetti

A serious game, developed for students training to become radiological technologists. Drawing on content related to environmental health, vulnerabilities, and workplace practices, students design the game experience, interactions, and visual identity, transforming specialized knowledge into an engaging learning experience.

Meet Clémence Imbert, graphic design historian and researcher. Her work explores the history of graphic design exhibitions and book covers (Les Couvertures de livres. Une histoire graphique, Actes Sud — Imprimerie Nationale, 2022, Prix d’Académie 2023). She currently leads WYSIWYG (wysiwyg.ch), a research project on the adoption of graphic design software by designers in the 1980s.

The Powers of Images

The course approaches the power of images through visual studies, examining the political, social, ethical, and aesthetic issues surrounding their creation and circulation today.

Through collective readings and discussions of key texts by Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, W. J. T. Mitchell, Johanna Drucker, and Edward Tufte, students develop a critical understanding of how images are read, received, and used to communicate and construct arguments. taken in HEAD - Genève, Haute école d'art et de design by @head_visualknowledge

Result of a two week workshop with 1st year students led by @eurostandard. Students explored the possibilities and limits of image-making by documenting creative workflows from input and tools to curated outputs and collectively mapping their results to build a shared visual cookbook of image typologies.

How can we tell the story of urban transformation differently?
In this workshop, developed in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Centre of HES-SO Geneva (CITÉ) and the Quartiers en chantier project, students explored territorial mediation through information design and knowledge translation.
Drawing on text corpora related to real urban transformation processes in Geneva, they experimented with graphic tools and visual narratives to make complex issues more accessible, foster dialogue between stakeholders, and communicate situated knowledge.
At the intersection of information design, visual storytelling, and mediation, this work reflects on how territories are represented, narrated, and transformed.

What did we learn? With @claire_dubuy

Through Claire’s journey as a student, this project with @johanneroten became a space for experimentation and discovering new ways of thinking visually. From research to making, every step opened new perspectives on how knowledge can be shared, translated, and experienced.

Meet @romankarrer, graphic designer, researcher, and occasional editor and publisher. His practice focuses on the development of visual systems and vocabularies, taking forms such as publications, visual identities, websites, maps, and visual research across cultural, architectural, artistic, and pedagogical contexts.

He understands graphic design and the closely related practices of publishing and structuring as an epistemic field, and explores how visual systems, infrastructures, tools, and forms of individual and collective agency shape the production and circulation of knowledge.

Cartographies in Practice – Mapping as Situated Discourse

Co-taught with geographer Pieroni Raphaël, the seminar examines the diversity of maps and their uses across historical and contemporary contexts. It fosters a critical understanding of mapping practices and their regimes of representation, with an emphasis on the analysis and construction of spatio-temporal narratives.

Through research-led collective making, students explore map production as an operative method that oscillates between analysis, translation, and critical knowledge production. Schematic, diagrammatic, and infographic approaches are used as tools for constructing situated arguments.

This semester, in collaboration with @Amnesty_Suisse and their ongoing global campaign #ProtectTheProtest, students work with datasets of different protests in Switzerland to develop critical visual research. The course is further informed by contributions from guests such as Michaela Mumenthaler (investigative journalist at RTS), Lukas Hamilcaro (architect–illustrator), and other practitioners from related fields.

Corpus
Collecting, ordering, re-presenting.

A week dedicated to making, not researching.
During the workshop led by @maximewoeffray @forma.editions students worked with archives as raw material, books, catalogues, and fragments from the @room_and_book collection.

Working in pairs, they chose a simple theme and pushed it as far as possible through selection, editing, and composition. Making decisions, letting things go.
Shaping a corpus without words only through images, rhythm, and layout.

The outcome: a black & white risograph publication, each pair developing three spreads.
A collective process with daily feedback, guided by one key constraint: make ideas visible.
