Yeah, I said it before you could.

Because if I saw someone claiming to help with migraines AND fibromyalgia AND POTS AND chronic fatigue AND IBS, my first thought would be the same as yours.

But here’s what changed my mind about my own work:
->Your nervous system doesn’t care what the diagnosis is called. It just knows it’s not safe. And when it stays stuck in that state, symptoms show up everywhere. Gut. Head. Muscles. Energy. All of it.

The condition is the surface. The nervous system is the root.

This is why someone can spend years treating migraines and still wake up every morning with one. They’re treating the branch.

The work we do goes underneath that.

We work with you to treat the root cause, not just the symptoms (branch).

Grace and I presented at ATNS this weekend about what happens when food becomes a source of fear for people living with chronic conditions.

Afterward, so many practitioners shared stories about patients struggling with the consequences of restrictive diets. It was a reminder of just how important this conversation is.

Our recommendations matter, and so does the language we use when talking about food.

If you work with patients with chronic conditions, are you seeing food fear show up in your practice? We’d love to hear your experiences in the comments!

And stay tuned because tomorrow we’re sharing a post specifically for patients about food fear, the nervous system, and how to start rebuilding a sense of safety around eating!

All of us had been told at one point that we’d probably never recover from our symptoms.

Every single one of us did with the help of mind body medicine.

If there’s one thing we want you to know about chronic pain and symptoms it’s that relief IS possible!

I did it scared. AGAIN.

Yesterday @callieknutrition and I stood in front of 300+ people at the @neuroplasticorg conference talking about something that once completely consumed my life: food intolerances.

There was a time when I could only eat about 15 foods. I was terrified of reactions, constantly monitoring my body, and convinced that something was wrong with nearly everything I ate.

What I didn’t understand then was how much my nervous system was involved.

Food reactions are REAL. But not every reaction is necessarily an immune response or a sign that a food is harming you. Sometimes, a sensitized nervous system can learn to associate certain foods with danger, creating very real physical symptoms through conditioned responses.

And through mind body training, those learned responses can change. I know because I’ve lived it, and now I get to help others explore this possibility too.

AND healing meant teaching my nervous system being scared is ok

I was SCARED to get on that stage. My nervous system was activated, my heart was racing, and a part of me wanted to run away.

And I did it anyway.

Because the same principles I teach about healing apply to how we live our lives. We don’t have to wait until fear disappears to show our brains that we’re capable of doing something new.

Sometimes we heal by expanding our capacity to experience discomfort without interpreting it as danger.

You don’t have to wait until you feel safe, confident, or symptom-free to start reclaiming your life. Sometimes taking the next step is how your nervous system learns that you’re safe.

From being afraid of food to standing on a stage teaching hundreds of people about the nervous system’s role in food sensitivities.

Pretty freaking cool what can happen when you stop waiting to feel ready. 🄹 by @heal.with.grace

I knew SO much about the mind-body connection long before I actually started healing.

I was a therapist. I understood trauma, emotions, holistic health, the nervous system. I’d spent years trying different treatments, working with practitioners, and searching for answers.

But understanding something intellectually and actually experiencing it in your body are two very different things.

For years, I thought nervous system regulation meant learning how to calm myself down, manage my symptoms, and feel safe.

And while those things can be helpful, what really changed my life was learning how to expand my capacity to experience life WITHOUT constantly trying to control how I felt.

To feel difficult emotions without needing to escape them. To experience uncomfortable sensations without immediately interpreting them as danger. To have a symptom flare without deciding it meant I was back at square one.

And to slowly start doing the things I’d been avoiding because I was afraid of how my body might respond.

THIS is where so much of the learning happens.

Your brain is constantly updating its predictions based on your experiences. And when you repeatedly experience something you’ve learned to fear without the catastrophe you expected, your nervous system has an opportunity to learn something new.

It’s not about being calm all the time. It’s about building the capacity to be with MORE of life, even when it’s uncomfortable.

I didn’t get my life back by making my world smaller and safer. I got it back by gradually expanding what I believed I could experience.

And that changed everything.

I talked about doing things scared a few days ago, and I want to explain why this was actually one of the most important parts of my nervous system healing.

For YEARS, I waited for my body to feel safe enough to live again. I was afraid to travel, exercise, eat certain foods, make plans, or do anything that might trigger another flare.

I WANTED to do those things. I just didn’t trust my body to handle them.

But here’s what changed for me:

I stopped waiting until I felt safe to start living again. I realized that sometimes, living was actually HOW I started feeling safer.

Here’s why 🧠
Your brain is constantly learning from experience. When you repeatedly avoid something out of fear of triggering symptoms, your brain can continue associating that experience with danger.

But when you gradually start doing things that scare you, you’re giving your brain new evidence that challenges those old predictions.

This is part of what’s called inhibitory learning. Your brain develops new associations that compete with old fear-based patterns.

You don’t have to feel completely calm, confident, or symptom-free for that learning to happen.

You can feel nervous and still go on the trip. You can experience discomfort without automatically assuming something is wrong. You can feel uncertainty and still trust yourself to navigate what comes up.

This isn’t about ignoring medical advice, forcing yourself through symptoms, or pushing past genuine physical limitations.

It’s about recognizing when FEAR is making your world smaller and gently expanding what’s possible.

And the more opportunities you give your brain to learn something new, the more those old patterns can begin to change.

✨ This is exactly what we practice inside the Mind Body Healing Method. We learn to recognize nervous system patterns, regulate, rewire fear-based responses, and reclaim the parts of life chronic symptoms have taken away.

Nervous system work is nuanced, it is subjective to the person so no I don’t believe in it a one size fits all, but I do 100% believe that we can heal our bodies and get out of the labels that you’re collecting.

These aren’t just affirmations. They’re conversations with the parts of myself that learned they needed to stay in protection.

When our nervous system perceives danger, whether physical or emotional, it can contribute to chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety, and other symptoms. Sometimes regulation isn’t about calming down. It’s about understanding what we’re protecting ourselves from.

Here are 5 ways I practice this:
1. When I’m afraid of being seen:
ā€œI’ve got you. It makes sense that this feels scary. We don’t have to do this all at once. I’ll stay with you, and we’ll take one step at a time.ā€

2. When I feel completely alone:
ā€œI know this hurts. We don’t have to push the sadness or grief away anymore. You don’t have to carry this alone. I’m here now. It’s safe to feel this.ā€

3. When I don’t feel good enough:
ā€œYou were never supposed to earn your worth. You don’t have to prove yourself to deserve love, rest, or belonging. You’re already enough.ā€

4. When my symptoms make me panic:
ā€œI know you’re scared. Thank you for trying to protect me. We don’t have to solve everything right now. Let’s slow down together. It’s okay to be with this sensation.ā€

Then I gently bring awareness to the sensation instead of trying to make it disappear.

5. When I’m afraid of failing:
ā€œWe don’t have to be perfect to be safe. Making a mistake doesn’t mean we’ll be rejected. Whatever happens, we’ll figure it out together.ā€

Nervous system healing isn’t just about regulation. It’s also about understanding the protective patterns, emotions, and beliefs underneath our stress responses.

When we meet these parts with compassion instead of fear, we create new experiences that help our brains learn that emotions and sensations aren’t inherently dangerous.

This is part of what we practice inside the Mind Body Healing Method nervous system program for healing chronic pain & illness.

If you’re navigating chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety, or persistent symptoms, my FREE masterclass teaches you how to work WITH your brain and nervous system to support healing.

Sometimes the most powerful healing work is getting out there and LIVING your damn life. āš”ļø

* to be clear I’m not talking about pushing yourself before you’re ready.
* this is inspiration to let you know that your body is so wise and strong more than you ever realize

I wrote all about this in today’s Substack, including how to expand without pushing through.
