Across Appalachia, no matter what side of the mountains you live on, one thing remains the same: addiction has touched the lives of everyone within our region.

In the summer of 2016, as we watched our communities begin to crumble under the weight of such a pervasive disease, we knew something had to be done. We couldn’t sit idly by watching friends, family, and neighbors succumb to the evils of opioid addiction. With the help and support of our community, and the want for a brighter Appalachian future, our 501(c)3 Hope in the Hills was born.

The past ten years have been a whirlwind of community, compassion, and most of all: hope. From the growth of our yearly event, Healing Appalachia, to the ever-growing culture of recovery we have been able to foster, the impact we have and will continue to make is only possible through the support we have seen from all of you.

There is no magic cure for this disease, and there is no one-size-fits-all fix for the impact it has had on our culture. Despite that, we know that through coming together - by creating community - we can create something bigger than the perils and sorrows of substance use disorder.

More than the music, Healing Appalachia stands as a testament to the power of community, compassion, and empathy. Through your support, our impact has grown larger than we could ever have imagined, and we have been able to support organizations across Appalachia doing incredible works for those in recovery and their loved ones.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for being our community.

Keep an eye out for a special announcement coming very soon 💙

The Official Healing Appalachia 2025 Recap Video is here! 🎉

We’d like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who makes this possible each year, and to everyone who helped to make our move to the Bluegrass State so successful. Our volunteers, artists, sponsors, vendors, staff, and of course, each and every one of you who make this all possible each year. We couldn’t be more grateful for your continued support and for helping us to make this our biggest year yet.

This platform we have been given allows us to make a real, measurable impact across all 13 Appalachian states and beyond. Your support directly goes towards this impact, fueling recovery efforts across the region. It is truly the honor of a lifetime to be able to host a celebration of the community and culture of recovery, and to in any way help to destigmatize addiction and recovery. To truly put the full breadth of our gratitude into words is a near-impossible task, but to sum it up: Thank you.

We won’t soon forget the memories we made this year, and we’re already looking forward to next year 💙

Recovery takes time, and too often the biggest barrier is simply the up-front cost of safe and structured Recovery Housing.

By joining the Giving Appalachia Monthly Giving Club, you’re directly funding Recovery Housing Scholarships that remove this barrier for people in early recovery.

Just $20 a month can provide a scholarship covering up to one month of rent in certified recovery housing, offering someone in recovery the stability and support they need to rebuild their life.

Our goal is 1,000 monthly donors which is enough to support 25–50 individuals every month, or up to 600 people each year. As a Giving Appalachia member, your impact is steady, measurable, and life-changing.

The Giving Appalachia Monthly Giving Club is a movement that speaks to the heart of what we can accomplish together to ensure that anyone ready to take their next step in recovery has the chance to do so.

Last week, our good friends over at @sayhellointhere held a five-day celebration in Chicago, where @john_prine's legacy began, honoring and remembering John ahead of what would have been his 80th birthday on October 10th.

In the five years since The Hello In There Foundation was founded, they have awarded more than $1.4 million in grants; supported 127 organizations across 20 states, plus national and international partners; granted nearly $600,000 across Nashville, the city the Prine family calls home; and distributed direct disaster relief to low-income families, seniors, and hospitality workers in the wake of both Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton.

They have stood with us each year, fighting for a brighter future for Appalachia free from addiction.

We'd like to extend our congratulations and our thanks to The Hello In There Foundation for all the incredible work they do both in and outside of the recovery space 💛

--
The Hello in There Foundation is an initiative established by the family of John Prine, to honor his memory and continue the love, kindness and generosity he shared with the world. The work of the foundation is inspired and guided by John’s simple song title, Hello In There.

Our mission aims to identify and collaborate with individuals and communities to offer support for people who are marginalized, discriminated against or, for any reason, are otherwise forgotten.

Addiction thrives in isolation. Which is why community is so incredibly important - community that can often be found in Recovery Housing.

Not only does recovery housing provide community, but it provides a safe, stable place to heal, to grow, and to nurture recovery.

You can make a direct positive impact on recovery journeys by becoming a part of our Giving Appalachia Monthly Giving Club, which provides those in recovery with scholarships for recovery housing.

Often, one of the biggest obstacles to recovery is safe, stable, supportive housing. Help to be a part of dismantling that barrier. Join Giving Appalachia today 💚

Our partnership with the @matthewperryfoundation has been invaluable to our organization.

Last year, they funded Camp Grindstone - our recovery campsite - in its entirety. To work with them and to help carry Matthew's legacy is such an honor. They have continued their support by helping to fund ReStage Appalachia, our workforce development program, music therapy services at WVU, and the expansion of Save A Life Day to a national level!

We are thrilled to take a moment to highlight a project that we had the opportunity to provide initial funding for: the Commonwealth Center for Fathers and Families and Fletcher Group's Fatherhood and Recovery Program.

The program aims to "address the lack of evidence-based programming for parents within the context of recovery housing translating to a demonstration project with the goal to assist recovery housing programs to become more father-centric environments through implementation of the Fatherhood and Recovery (FAR) intervention involving organizational training on creating more father-centric
organizations, a 10-week parenting in recovery curriculum, as well as technical assistance to identify activities and policies for implementation.""

"Qualitative accounts indicated the FAR intervention had positive impacts on the ultimate goal of the intervention, with all four programs experiencing positive effects of the intervention on caregiver – child reunification."

It's the honor of a lifetime to be able to support programs that positively impact the lives of not only those in the recovery program, but the lives of those around them as well. Thank you to the Commonwealth Center for Fathers and Families and the Fletcher Group for continuing to do incredible work for fathers and their families! by @healingappalachia

Being able to support the organizations DOING the work, such as @reachjusticewv, is an incredible honor. Many of these organizations rely on grant funding and donations to continue their good work.

"The REACH Initiative is committed to seeing each individual healed and restored: body, soul, and spirit, so they can successfully live out their life. This mandates attending to physical health, mental and emotional health, as well as spiritual health. Through the establishment of a statewide network of Reentry Councils, we seek to bring about lasting change and collaborative impact in our communities."

Today is the seventh annual Save A Live Day, a day dedicated to educating about and providing the life-saving opioid overdose reversal medication, Naloxone. We'd like to take a moment to look back at the crucial harm reduction work we have been able to accomplish thanks to the support we have received.

“One year since Healing Appalachia 2025, West Virginia-based nonprofit organization Hope in the Hills remains committed to their mission of combating addiction and providing recovery support year-round. Funded by last year’s music festival proceeds, over $1.3 MILLION has been reinvested into surrounding communities to aid in distributing resources, providing overdose-prevention education, strengthening partnerships, and continuing public engagement between event years.

“Naloxone access and overdose-response education is one of Hope in the Hills’ long-standing areas of focus, circulating approximately 20,000 preventive naloxone doses during last year’s music festival, and remaining a key sponsor for community and regional distribution networks, namely SOAR WV’s Save a Life Day. First sponsoring the event with two locations in 2021, today (9/24) during the seventh annual nationwide call to action, Save A Life Day, supports more than 1,271 free naloxone education and distribution events in all 50 states. A full list of participating locations can be found at www.savealife.day.”

We are beyond appreciative of the support we have received for our mission over the past few years. The work we have been able to accomplish would not have been possible without each and every one of you, and our generous partners.

This support allows us to create positive change year-round in our work fostering addiction prevention, wellness and recovery.
