Motherhood made me look at my childhood differently.

A difficult mum. An enabling dad. Patterns I thought were just part of who I was.

Now I’m trying to understand them, heal and parent differently. 🤍

If motherhood made you question your own childhood too, what was the first thing you realised?

Week 1/52 of choosing myself. 🤍

Somewhere between motherhood, work and being everything to everyone, I forgot to choose me.

So I’m giving myself 52 weeks to change that.

Week 1: I finally started.

I created this account AND started the workbook I’d been too scared to start.

I don’t know who I’ll be by Week 52…
but I really want to meet her. 🤍

Follow @healingdoesntlie and come with me — let’s see what 52 weeks of choosing ourselves can do. 🌿

My therapist asked me a question I’d never stopped to ask myself.

Why can I hug my children all day, but tense up when an adult hugs me?

Maybe I don’t struggle with affection.

Maybe my nervous system only relaxes when love feels safe… when it comes without conditions, expectations or criticism.

Therapy hasn’t changed who I am.

It’s helping me understand why I became this version of myself.

Have you ever discovered something about yourself that changed everything?

🤍

Growing up with a narcissistic mother can leave you constantly questioning whether your hurt is “bad enough” to count.

When people say “but she’s your mum”, it can minimise years of difficult mother-daughter dynamics, emotional manipulation, guilt, criticism and feeling unsafe in your own family.

For many daughters of narcissistic mothers, becoming a mum themselves is when everything starts to look different.

You start thinking about breaking generational cycles, healing childhood patterns, setting boundaries and making sure your own children grow up feeling safe, loved and heard.

That’s what this page is about. 🤍

If you’re a daughter of a difficult or narcissistic mum and you’re trying to parent differently, follow @healingdoesntlie — you’ll fit right in here.

16 weeks without getting my hair done. 😭

Somewhere between being a busy mum, working and being there for everyone else, self-care kept getting pushed to the bottom of the list.

This week I finally booked the hair appointment. After 16 long weeks and it felt GOOD!. 😂

Week 4/52 of choosing myself — because mums are allowed to make time for themselves too. 🤍

What’s one thing you keep saying you’ll book “next week”?

Therapy is making me realise how often I confuse being a good person with being constantly available. 🫠

Texts, calls, people needing help… even when I’m overwhelmed, my brain says reply, answer, help — or you’re letting someone down.

Learning that boundaries don’t make me rude. Being unavailable doesn’t make me uncaring. 🤍

Send this to the woman who replies in 0.3 seconds even when she’s drowning. 😂🐌

Growing up with a difficult or narcissistic mum can be hard enough. Having people minimise your childhood because “she’s your mum” can make you question your own experience too.

Therapy and motherhood have made me look differently at the things I once thought were normal — the mother wound, childhood trauma, dysfunctional family patterns and generational cycles I’m now determined not to repeat with my own daughters. 🤍

If you grew up with a difficult mum and you’re now trying to do things differently, SEND this to the person who actually gets it — and follow @healingdoesntlie. You’ve found your people. 🤍

Growing up with a narcissistic mum made me focus so much on her behaviour, I never questioned the enabling parent beside her.

Did you have a “fun” or “safe” parent who actually kept the peace instead of protecting you? Comment “me” if this hit. 🤍

Being everyone’s fixer meant I got very good at putting myself last.

So I’m learning to choose myself too. 🤍
Week 3/52 — The Alpine Coaster 🎢

Who said choosing myself couldn’t be fun!

Send this to the woman who’s always fixing everyone else. 🫶

Save this if motherhood changed how you see your own mum — and stay if you’re healing a mother wound while raising your own children. 🤍 @healingdoesntlie

Having my daughter made me realise how much I’d normalised. What’s something you only recognised as an adult? 🤍

There’s space here for anyone trying to make sense of it too @healingdoesntlie
