#TBT 2012 Jaffna (Eelam)🇱🇰 Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

This footage is from my performance of “Heal Lanka” when I was living there in 2012, doing work around post-civil-war reconciliation @slunites Future Leaders Conference in Jaffna — the former LTTE stronghold which I had also visited during the ceasefire period in 2005. I’ve always felt the love in J-Town despite brutal war from 1983-2009!

Little did I know that the Rajapaksa regime would eventually ban my song from Sri Lankan radio & shut down the music video through pressure from the Ministry of Defence & Urban Development in 2013 when I returned to the states. A “peace anthem” calling for justice & unity became something the establishment apparently needed to silence. After the Rajapakses were kicked out by the people, I was finally able to return in 2025 — a journey documented in my upcoming film.

As someone from the Sinhala majority on the island, I’ve always felt a responsibility to confront the legacy of 500yrs of colonialism, majoritarianism, ethnic & religious repression and the ways Sinhalese dominance has marginalized minorities on the island since s/c independence in 1948.

Portuguese 1505-1658
Dutch 1658-1796
British 1796-1948

We can stand for 1 Lanka AND understand why Eelam Tamil identity carries such deep meaning for many of our people. This is not a simple conversation, but it is an important one — and the voices of people on the ground matter the most.

With the conclusion of the Easter bombing trial, some people have been convicted. But many questions remain, including: could this have been a false-flag operation involving the former corrupt regime? The victims deserve the whole truth.

Heal Lanka was never about pretending our history didn’t happen.

It was about confronting it directly:

“No more wars of attrition.
No more ethnic divisions.
Time to end religious chauvinism..
Peace can only come thru justice for all Sri Lankans that’s 4real.”

I wrote that in 2010.
I performed it in Jaffna in 2012.
The former regime banned it in 2013

And somehow in 2026, the message is still relevant..

@kurrypinch has announced it is closing its beautiful LA location by the end of the month. we are saddened to hear this news as Chef G successfully put Sri Lankan-Fusion food on the map in la and allowed all walks of life to try our islands food, while appreciating its roots.

we are honoring Kurrypinchs legacy and hosting our ‘Taste the Final Course’ to join us to celebrate its final weekend.

recap of our first ever baila night 🫶🏾 truly amazing to see the community come together, whether you were dancing, playing carrom, eating sri lankan short eats, or just enjoying the night, it was truly a pleasure to have you here with us! we were grateful to hear from so many of you that there is a huge need for third spaces like heal lanka.

incredible work everyone 🪷 from gracious attendees purchasing tickets, donors, and vendor donations, we were able to collectively raise $1000, and send over the donations to @sambolfoundation . we had a lovely conversation with founder @bundiboss and she expresses her immense gratitude to the care, and love from everyone that participated in baila night.

we discussed how tourists that visit sri lanka come with money, make promises to donate themselves, yet instead go and build hotels on our beaches, and utilize sri lankans remaining resources for there own greed and capitalism. how violence against women and children has steadily been increasing. and how victims continue to stay silent.

@sambolfoundation has not received a donation quite like this in the eight years they have been open. they provide therapy, legal assistance, child care, crisis support, and shelter. we are beyond thankful to be able to raise funds for an incredible organization that tirelessly helps our community be free from violence, and to build a better future for women and children in sri lanka.

heal lanka is designed to bring diaspora folks, immigrants from sri lanka, and beyond, to come together, to remember where we come from, raise community, to never give up and always find a way to help our countries and people back home.
