Desire doesn’t always arrive first. 🕯️

Sometimes it waits. For a slow evening, a soft touch, a moment where nothing is expected of you.

Psychologists call this responsive desire: wanting that grows after closeness begins, not before it. Many people feel desire this way, especially in long relationships. It doesn’t mean something is wrong with you, or with your love.

Start with warmth. Let the wanting follow.

Four habits that quietly wear love down.

Most couples don't break over one big fight. They drift, one small pattern at a time.

Psychologist John Gottman called these patterns the Four Horsemen: criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling. Contempt (the eye-roll, the taunt, the sarcasm) was the strongest predictor of divorce in his research.

The hopeful part is on slide 6. 🤍

Which one shows up most when you're tired? No judgment, most of us have one.

Most fights never get solved. That’s okay.

John Gottman found that about 69% of couples’ conflicts are “perpetual”: they come from lasting differences in personality and values, so they keep coming back.

Happy couples don’t win these arguments. They learn to talk about them with humour, curiosity and kindness.

Which argument do you two keep having? 🔁

Your partner hears the attack, not the request.

“You never listen” and “I felt ignored tonight” can be about the exact same moment. One opens a conversation. The other starts a defence.

John Gottman’s research found that criticism, blaming someone’s character instead of naming one moment, is often where a hard talk starts to go wrong. And conversations tend to end the way they begin.

Swipe for two swaps you can try tonight.

Some of the hardest conversations happen in silence: in the needs we do not name and the questions we do not know how to ask.

Hearts Lab explores love, intimacy, attachment, conflict and modern marriage through real stories and relationship psychology. We’re here for thoughtful reflection, practical language and conversations without judgment or shame.
