Toured the Adelman Residence today.

Built in 1956 by Thornton Abell in association with O’Neil Ford, a rare meeting of California and Texas modernism.

Even more interesting, Benedikt Taschen bought the house in 2018 and spent years restoring it. There is something very fitting about the publisher whose books shaped how so many of us see art and architecture becoming the caretaker of a house like this.

A very special house, ready for its next chapter.

A poet built this.

In 1922, Alice Lynch commissioned a house in West Adams and got something almost nobody in this city has anymore. A building made of the ground it stands on.

Nearly every Spanish Colonial Revival house in Los Angeles is a costume. Stucco over a wood frame, arches that hold nothing up, a red roof doing an impression of somewhere else.

This is not that. The Alice Lynch House is true adobe. Stacked, sun-dried mud brick, thick enough that the walls do the structural work themselves and cool the rooms without help.

Henry Harwood Hewitt drew it. Then he handed it to John Byers.

Byers is the part I can’t stop thinking about. He taught Spanish and French at Santa Monica High before he built anything, took his first commission in 1916 for his own principal, and never went to architecture school at all. He made the bricks himself. On site. Out of the dirt that was already there.

Four bedrooms wrapped around a walled courtyard, and a cactus in the middle of it nearly as tall as the house. Original arched doors. Original timber beams. An outdoor shower hidden behind an adobe wall, which is the kind of detail you only get when the person building the house is enjoying himself.

Roughly forty real adobes are left in Los Angeles. This one is Historic-Cultural Monument No. 621.

El Cabrillo ✨

In 1927, Cecil B. DeMille set out to house the actors he was bringing west, and brought in the legendary Arthur & Nina Zwebell to design this Hollywood courtyard building. The result is Old Hollywood frozen in brick. A tiled courtyard, a tiered fountain, beamed ceilings, and endless romance.
