I want to express my gratitude to everyone for their support of my recent monograph, Skipping Sundays, that was released this spring. This project has been many years in the making, primarily existing in my mind for decades as I worked through my uncertainties about religion and my feelings of being different in a community with strong beliefs. In April, I had a book release event, and it was a joy to connect with so many individuals who share similar feelings and are eager for open discussions. Around half of the edition has been sold. Excited to announce that @dawnlandes new children’s album, Catch A Little Sun, is out in the world today. I worked with Dawn a few years ago and was excited to collaborate again. For the promotional photos for the album I looked to the cover art by @aobcreates for inspiration. I created a set to bring those illustrations to life. About BlueSome say my dad’s death was the spark that ignited my depression, but this feeling has been brewing for a while. I started to notice a sadness creep in a few years into my 40s. I searched “depression in women” and stumbled across articles stating women are the most depressed at age 44. I was at that very moment 44.Loss during this time in a woman’s life can weigh heavily. Children are getting older and need the comfort of a parent less; the health of one’s own parent(s) is starting to fail, and hormonal shifts begin. Using the color blue, which for hundreds of years has been associated with melancholy and sadness-these images evoke this period in my life and how it affects those around me. A mid-point, as I am stripping down, taking stock, and finding a new place amongst the loss. by @heatherevanssmith

Artists Shooting Artists Day 5 This is the final image I’ll be sharing this week in my stories about my commissioned shoots. During this 2020 session with musician @hcmcentire_music , I used a projector as my light source. I drew inspiration from the cover of her album, Eno Axis, and incorporated imagery featuring farms along with some spotlight effects. I don’t usually work with artificial light, so it was a great afternoon playing around with projections.Thanks for sticking with me this week as I shared the stories behind my commissioned shoots with other artists. Artists Shooting Artists Day 4 More stories behind my commissioned shoots this week. Today’s image is of musician @dawnlandes . In 2023, we brought to life vintage images featured in the 1971 Liberated Woman’s Songbook. This particular recreation holds a special place in my heart because it took two shoots to achieve it. The first was the recreation of the 1960s advertisement for the Cattle Baron steakhouse, and the second image recreates a photograph from a protest at the Miss America pageant in 1968. At that protest, an activist is holding the Cattle Baron ad, drawing a parallel between the pageant and a cattle auction.Recently, writer Rachel Ossip, who is the granddaughter of Jerry Ossip, the owner of the Cattle Baron steakhouse, wrote an article titled Finding the Cattle Queen. This piece delves into the story behind that image and how it has evolved over the past fifty years.Dawn and I recently collaborated on a shoot for her upcoming children’s album, Catch a Little Sun. Artists Shooting Artists Day 3More stories behind my commissioned shoots this week. Today’s image is of mosaic artist Jan Detter. Wake Forest University Magazine hired me to take portraits of Jan for an editorial piece. I hadn’t met her before, but I had researched her work and noticed she incorporates vintage buttons into her mosaics. I emailed suggesting that we could glue some buttons on her face for a unique portrait. She was more interested in a traditional portrait in front of one of her mosaics. When I arrived at her house/studio, we spent a good chunk of the day chatting and snapping photos of her in front of her art. We hit it off right away. Just as we were about to finish up, I threw out a suggestion. How about you lie on the ground with your head in this pan, and I’ll pour buttons all around you? She looked a bit nervous for a moment but then said, why not? Although her article wasn’t initially meant to be the cover story, the editors loved the image so much that they decided to change the layout. After that day, Jan and I became quick friends. We often laugh about how we progressed from standard portraits to being buried in buttons that day. #artistportrait #heatherevanssmith #buttons #portrait by @heatherevanssmith

Artists Shooting Artists Day 2The story behind this portrait goes back to a shoot I had with @cashavelly in 2021. I’ve been collaborating with her since the start, and it’s amazing to see how our sessions have changed over time. For this particular shoot, we met at the beach. I captured this image using just my camera, a chair, and our determination to get out of bed at 5:30 AM. I laid on my back on the sand while she kept leaping off the chair repeatedly (she’s not just a musician, but also a dancer!). The morning light was absolutely stunning, making that early wake-up totally worth it. #musicianshoot #dancer #photo #dancerportrait by @heatherevanssmith

Artists Shooting Artists Day 1I enjoyed sharing the stories behind images in my archive last week. I am going to keep on going this week but this time with commissioned portraits and the stories behind them. Most of my commissioned work is for other artists, and it always turns into a fantastic collaboration where we both aim for that perfect vision. Today’s image is from a promotional shoot I did with @hcmcentire_music . I’ve collaborated with her several times, and I think this shoot might just be my favorite. We were in a cabin that had a small staircase, and I got the idea to shoot from above. Initially, I wanted H.C. to sit in a chair that would be lying on its side on the ground. While I was setting up my camera, I had her just hang there for a bit as I adjusted my settings. The chair was next to her, and when I looked down, this spontaneous setup captured a feeling of loss and longing that my original idea wouldn’t have conveyed. The chair symbolized so much more on its own. You never know when a little moment will turn into the perfect shot.#musicianshoot #heatherevanssmith #portrait by @heatherevanssmith

Day 7 and final day of my week of sharing the stories behind the images. This one is from my The Heart and The Heavy series titled Collide (shot in 2012). This was one of those magical moments where the image turned out as I had envisioned it. I usually shoot an image with just me or just me and the model. For this one I had four people assisting. Two on each side to throw beach balls. It became performance art out there on the beach with a small group forming to watch the show. #heatherevanssmith #beachballs #photo by @heatherevanssmith
