The journey creating a pole piece is much like life itself. It changes, you pivot, you find that you like things, then you find you don’t like them, then maybe you rediscover them again. At some point, things become constant. Just when you think you’ve settled on something, your routine might change again; you reinvent a piece of the story and through that, yourself. It is a challenge, but the only way out is through. You become stronger with every practice run - every adversity - and at the end of it all, you stand tall at the end not collapsing from such taxing cardio. Months later, you’ll wonder how you once did cardio like that in the first place for minutes straight. And then...you start a whole new routine for your next show with new ideas, much like chapters in life.

These 3 minutes are a reflection of me at the time and what I was going through. It was my first time on stage. It is a miracle I did not fall off the pole because it was so slippery during testing that morning. I am proud of how I performed because I created this during an emotionally stressful time and also a physically stressful time. I was working very long hours, had a long commute, low sleep, and on top of that, 13 sneakster fabric pieces to keep track of throughout 3 minutes >.<. Pole (and my family/friends) got me through that time. It motivated me, and I found community in a city where community can be hard to find. When I received this video that year, I never posted it for various reasons. But recently a dear friend encouraged I share it. I love and appreciate those who encourage me to share rather than cage me in. So eff it. Here it is. Take what you wish from it. I won’t explain why I was shedding pieces of myself - that symbolic meaning is for you to take away what it means to you.

In pole, your final piece is made from everything that got you there, whether it’s a move that makes it to the final piece or one that was there along the way while you practiced even if it didn’t make the cut. All of the practice makes you stronger, wiser, and leads to something meaningful. You, your story - everything that contributed to it and how far you’ve come - is worth being proud of. by @heatherfaherty
