Last night’s menorah was raw dogged candles from Daiso. The other photos include the breathtaking lobby at the Okura Hotel in Tokyo (the feeling in it and most physical and landscape spaces here are really about being felt… this one feels serene, reverential and comfortable, a very unlikely combo), @kensscratch , the coolest person we’ve met in Japan, an ancient wooden shrine in Kyoto, maybe the oldest wooden building I’ve seen, and Mariko in part of a very old stationary store in Kyoto. It’s her 50th birthday today. Please wish my love a happy birthday! by @heathr

Last night’s menorah was back to Mariko’s original design with milan, Japanese oranges from the 7-11 that are super easy to peel and sweet in an incredible Ryokan in Kyoto at the epicenter of Japan. Happy Hannukah! by @heathr

First night in Tokyo, we walked hand in hand through Shibuya. I noticed a couple of observant Jews with tzitzit and said “they seem Chabad-y.” A moment later I saw a Menorah Mobile in Shibuya crossing. I wished the guy next to it Chag Sameach and he smiled and asked me to come light candles. I know Chabad and many orthodox Jewish organizations do not support marriage for lesbians but I’ve never had an interaction with Chabad (including when I performed for one of their fundraisers) that wasn’t completely warm and welcoming and willing to talk about anything I wanted to tell them. I smiled and yelled back, “we’re going to light the candles tonight at the hotel.” He looked happy and we gave each other the “we know Jews we light candles to remember Jews fought a war to not hide being Jews and more Jews were just murdered for it yesterday and we are determinedly joyful that we are alive to light candles tonight” look. Queer folks, step it up to be as welcoming to Jews as Jews have become for queer folks. No closets bubbelehs! Last night’s menorah was a tiny bread with cheese from the 7-11. by @heathr

Happy Hannukah. With my people in grief and celebration. Love to you all. Queer gentile friends: the pressure on Jews to closet in order to be safe is intensifying. Show up for Jews in support and in public to help change the temperature. This kind of support is necessary for this violence to be stopped. by @heathr
