Bookseller dedicated to radical ruptures in thought, spanning the 15th century to the present.

POSTS STORIES REELS

It’s Thursday. It’s 61 degrees. This morning was grey and cloudy here in New York City, the sun’s just broken through. It’s supposed to rain all weekend. Fall is decidedly here, a perfect crisp to the air, but it’s about to be in its most dour form. I don’t know about you, but I’m daydreaming about ripping the throttle open under a bright sky.

So, today’s a fun, breezy one: 17 bōsōzoku — Japanese motorcycle gang — publications, from the ‘80s up through the early aughts, are up on the website. There’s a particular emphasis on the *girl* gangs, with a number of issues from (if you’re psychologically built like me) one of the GOAT magazines, Teens Road.

Teens Road was the only magazine dedicated entirely to the culture, lifestyle, and spectacular aesthetic modifications of women bōsōzoku. The magazine was the first of its kind to focus on these sukeban (’girl delinquent’) clans and, at its peak, had a readership five times the recorded number of members of such clubs.

In the interim before the release of our first large catalogue next month, Heavenacid is pleased to offer other exciting inventory separate from the upcoming Ira Silverberg collection.

This material not historically unrelated, however. We are delighted to offer a rare complete run of Between C and D — the highly influential magazine that encapsulated the East Village’s world of artistic production, and a masterpiece of design — with nearly all of the called-for ephemera and multiples, including the scarce Wojnarowicz / Scemama poster.

Produced by Joel Rose and Catherine Texier, the magazine was dot-matrix-printed on sheets of fanfold computer paper. It published new fiction by both established and emerging writers, including Kathy Acker, Lynne Tillman, Dennis Cooper, Gary Indiana, David Wojnarowicz, Eileen Myles, and Patrick McGrath, among numerous others.

But its pages also featured writers beyond the more expected Lower East Side names: The Spring/Summer 1985 issue (Vol. 4, No. 2) features one of Anthony Bourdain’s earliest pieces of published writing, being an excerpt of an early unpublished novel, Chef’s Night Out, titled “FAO”; the Fall/Winter 1989 issue (Vol. 5, No. 3) features the first printing of a short story by David Foster Wallace, “Crash of ‘69,” published in the same year as Girl with Curious Hair, and which is uncollected elsewhere.

Complete runs are extremely rare, and the present set also features a compelling provenance, having once been held by the SoHo Center Library at The New Museum — a seminal library of post-war art.

$Heavenacid is honored to be launching with this ‘teaser’ list, comprising a selection of items from the life, career, and collection of @irasilverberg. Co-founder and publisher of High Risk, Publicity Director of Grove Press in the ‘80s and later Editor-in-Chief, esteemed literary agent, educator, editorial and publicity consultant, *and more*, Ira Silverberg has been a leading and beloved figure in New York’s literary world since the 1980s. Throughout his career, Silverberg edited, published, or represented the likes of Kathy Acker, William S. Burroughs, Dennis Cooper, June Jordan, David Wojnarowicz, Cookie Mueller, John Giorno, Lynne Tillman, and numerous others. He has been responsible for nearly countless careers of now-pillars of the underground and avant-garde. A tireless reader and champion of writers on the margins, he continues to this day to be a significant bridge between small press experimentalists and the greater publishing world. His papers already housed at NYU’s Fales Library, Heavenacid is pleased to have acquired a substantial portion of works compiled throughout his life and career. This shortlist contains 25 items, showcasing a mere fraction of the entire collection. The complete catalogue is forthcoming soon! View the PDF at the link in bio! by @heavenacid$
