Your team doesn't have to be in the same room for a great group portrait. Composites exist for that very same reason, different schedules, different locations, one awesome cohesive shot of your whole team. The difference between a good photo and a headshot isn't technical. Good lighting. Sharp focus. Clean background. That's the minimum a photographer should give you. What makes a headshot different is something harder to describe. It's the moment someone stops worrying about how they look. There is no camera anymore. You get to be you. That's what you're seeing here. Not a better camera. Not a different lens. Just someone comfortable enough to let their personality show. Moment or looks can't be forced. Most people who tell me they're "not photogenic" are usually wrong. What they're really saying is: "I have no idea what to do in front of a camera." And that's completely different thing, that's why you work.with a professional. You don't need to know your angles. You don't need modeling experience. You don't need a perfect smile. You need direction. A big part of my job isn't taking photos, it's helping people feel comfortable enough to be themselves. That's it, that's when confidence comes to the surface. Felipe asked me this morning why I go out to take photos of strangers. The frustration? He wasn't coming with me. Hard to explain to a 3 year old. But I tried. They're not really strangers by the end of the day. You spend an hour with someone, learn what they're proud of, figure out how they want to be seen. That's not nothing. The professional version of yourself isn’t a different person. It’s the same person with better context. Somewhere along the way, a lot of us started treating “professional” like it meant becoming more formal, more careful, more filtered. So that’s how we show up. In photos. On LinkedIn. In bios. Even in meetings sometimes. And technically, it works. But it’s rarely memorable. The people you actually remember are the ones who feel completely like themselves and happen to be excellent at what they do. Not polished into a different personality. My kids didn't get the memo on coordinating outfits. One wanted the full robe. One had the lightsaber but lost the hood. The other one was just doing their own thing entirely. So I photographed them separately and stitched it all together. Same thing I do with corporate teams. Not everyone's available and in the same galaxy. Not everyone's comfortable the same way. Not everyone wore what you asked them to wear. Doesn't matter. Each person gets a moment that's actually theirs. Real expression, "all of them".Then we bring it all together as if they were in sync. The outfit isn't the photo. You are. I get asked what to wear to a session more than almost anything else. And every time I say the same thing, I honestly don't know. Because for what you do, for who you are, there's a different answer. Yes there's guidelines but it's not a one size fits all. The nice suit won't make this work if you don't own who you are. Neither will the jacket or the t-shirt. What makes it work is you wearing it. My job is to coach you in a way that the camera agrees, this is someone who knows what they're doing. That's already there. We just slow down, pause, and catch it. Wear something you're comfortable in. We'll take care of the rest. Solid colors help. Good lighting helps.
