With it being National Yoga Awareness Month I keep thinking about what this practice means.

The word yoga means to yolk or unite mind, body, and breath. When this union is achieved a state of presence can be unlocked. There is this liberation aka moksha or samadhi that can happen in this state from the burdens/attachments that come with our thoughts and emotions. On our mats we prep our bodies for total surrender to this presence (savasana) using the physical practice of asana and our breath (pranayama). The postures act as tools to observe what is going on internally. Our breath is the key to observing without judging ourselves what is happening on our inside. Even though we can experience this state of awareness on our yoga mats, this state can often be in flux through everyday life. This practice reminds me that contentment ,through the various degrees at which we experience life, can be achieved when finding this union of mind, body, and breath even if it’s just for a moment. There is real self love and power to that awareness.

Even though every day feels like a National Yoga Awareness month it has been extra special to reflect on this practice and how we can access it especially off of our mat. When we can create a safe space for ourselves we can start to ripple that to our communities. Yoga teaches us to resist the conditions our societies have built to tear people down, it teaches us how to go within and reconstruct what is harmful to ourselves so that we can in turn create safety and equity for those around us. Where can you deconstruct to what no longer serves you? It’s all starts with paying attention to your inhale and exhale 😌

The dichotomy between these two statements is drastic and it’s what I go back and forth with internally almost on a daily basis.

Internalized homophobia is still something I struggle with and it’s an element on this journey of self discovery that I find myself up against. Coming to terms with my sexuality and allowing myself the freedom to explore it is a gift in so many ways. It also brings challenges of questioning my own status quo and how I unpack the social conditions/stories I have within my internal social conditioning.

I am still learning to create space for both energies because ultimately they are both a part of me and continuing to learn to the love the parts of these narratives that need it the most.

Like a yoga flow unpacking and exploring one’s own identity is ever moving, changing, and evolving. Some days are good some days are a struggle and that is ok 🫶

I also recognize I am in a space where I get to for the most part safely explore my queerness. I recognize there are still so many people out there that don’t have this privilege. I acknowledge the pain and sacrifice to all those especially trans people of color who put their lives on the line for our rights, that fight will never go unrecognized.

Happy Pride to everyone out there on their own journey with themselves. Here’s to one day everyone having the freedom and safety to fully and authentically be themselves 🏳️‍🌈 💜

Season of the Scorpion 🦂 this season takes us below the surface, it allows us to sit/acknowledge the shadow parts of ourselves and encourages to love to those parts of ourselves. It’s the season of death, rebirth, and transformation which involves discomfort, trying and falling, and embodying how we incorporate transformation in our own lives.
