In a sign of Indigenous solidarity, more than a dozen leaders, activists and supporters came to D.C. over the last few days to spread the word of a major case that started this week of oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court. The case involves the Air Force’s disposal of hazardous munitions on a Guam beach that Indigenous peoples and activists say threatens the island’s main drinking water supply.

Maria Hernandez, an Indigenous woman and co-executive director at Micronesia Climate Alliance, said her family had been involved in a 60 year fight to reclaim land taken from them and now controlled by the federal government for testing do munitions at one point. She said in an interview this week that she’s worried that Indigenous people are “not afforded the same human right” as others when it comes to destroying ancestral lands.

“This is a David and Goliath fight,” she said, “about a project that has detrimental impacts to our land and water.” by @hedgpethd

Taking my Papa today to the VA - Veterans Affairs medical center. Flags at half staff here to honor Dolly. I love coming here for several reasons - it’s one of the few places in D.C. where everyone stays on the sidewalks and in crosswalks. And I’m also smiling because everyone you pass looks you in the eye and says good morning. Feels like we should respond to them all with - good morning and thank you for your service. by @hedgpethd

#nativepride. Wearing earrings gifted to me from my Ponca friend. Many Native people say if you compliment someone on something or say you like it - they will gift it to you someday. Lucky for me, my friend remembered me liking this sweet set of hers. I’m grateful. by @hedgpethd
