This house has been build in 1880 and is the original dairy of the town.

Its a herritage building and we had to preserve ceratin walls and windows.

My focus was to cut and end weld the steel structure t open up the space inside the building.

Tell me you’re a welder without telling me you’re a welder.

I finished two trades — fine woodworking and boilermaking.

At the time, it was mostly because I couldn’t decide which one I wanted to do.

Turns out, one made me better at the other.

Fine woodworking taught me patience.

You can’t hide a bad joint.
You can’t rush the preparation.
And sometimes removing another 1mm is 1mm too much.

It taught me to measure properly, think before cutting and pay attention to the details nobody else might notice.

I took all of that into welding.

Steel might feel less forgiving than timber, but the principle is actually very similar:

The quality of the finished piece is decided long before you start welding.

How you measure it.
How you cut it.
How you prepare the material.
How everything fits together.

The weld is sometimes the smallest part of the job.

Woodworking also taught me something I still believe today:

If you’re going to make something with your hands, make it properly.

Whether it’s timber or steel, I want to stand back at the end and know it’ll last.

Two trades I couldn’t choose between.

Thought of the day.

Australia was never meant to be home.

I came here for fun. I was 26, wanted to travel, see something different and explore the other side of the world.

I remember knocking on a door and simply asking if they needed a fabricator. They gave me a job.

I ended up building 48 trailers from scratch.

At the time, Australia felt easy to fall in love with. I felt accepted. The lifestyle was inviting. And somehow, what was supposed to be an adventure started becoming a life. I never came here thinking I would start a business.

But I still remember my sponsor telling me:

“You will never make it.” Maybe he was right about one thing.

I wasn’t going to make it there.

After 6 years I eventually walked away from a toxic workplace. I was young, new to Australia and didn’t really understand my rights. I didn’t even realise at the time that I was being underpaid.

I just knew something wasn’t right.

Looking back, walking away was probably one of the most important decisions I made.

Sometimes the place you’re told you’ll never make it is simply the place you’ve outgrown.

Australia wasn’t the plan.

Starting a business wasn’t the plan either.

Funny how life works.

Make a table base with me. Make it pink please.

We even had to import the powder coat from the USA.

5 things you probably didn’t know about me 👇

1. I was born in Kazakhstan and grew up in Germany.
2. I finished two trades — fine woodworking and boilermaking — mostly because I couldn’t decide what I wanted to become. Turns out, doing both wasn’t such a bad decision.
3. Woodworking is my passion, but welding is different. There’s something about taking raw steel and creating something that feels permanent.
4. I love butter and cookies. I’m pretty sure I got this from my grandfather. He used to dip his cookies into tea… with about 5 teaspoons of sugar.
5. I love being alone in nature. My current record is 12 hours in the bush — no phone, no music, no distractions. Just me and absolutely nothing to do.

I’m a boilermaker, woodworker, maker and someone who still really enjoys building things with his hands.

Now you know a little more about the person behind the welding helmet.

Mistakes happen. Even with the best planning from A to Z, things can go wrong. That’s the reality of working with people, timelines, and moving parts — you can’t control everything on site.
What you can control is how you respond.
What matters isn’t the mistake — it’s the solution.
This one came down to communication, quick thinking, and experience. Same strength. Same result. No compromise on quality.

Nature has no mercy.
When the storm comes, you can’t stop it.
Life can feel the same sometimes.

Those are the moments when I ask myself:
Why am I doing what I’m doing?
Why am I here?
Why risk everything?

In those moments, the only thing that matters is my “why.”

So I’m qurios...

What is your “why”? by @hegi_steeldesign
