The Stockport Collection,1976

In April 2020, during the first UK Covid-19 lockdown, I discovered negatives of images made during three weekend visits to Stockport Market near Manchester in 1976 and 1977. At the time I was a full-time student at Stirling University, and soon after, I became a parent with a full-time career in Social Work. All the negatives made with my father's old Leica M4 camera went into storage. For forty-three years.

On 16.6.2021, after increasing publicity via social media and a piece in #guardian, the first edition of The Stockport Collection book, hardback, 116 pages, beautifully designed by #robertshaw_design with foreword by the writer Paul Morley, was launched.

In April 2022, at the end of a very busy 10 day solo exhibition held in the converted coffee warehouse at #arestaurantwherethelightgetsin, just meters from the market where I'd taken the photos 45 years earlier, the first edition of the book sold out.

But due to popular demand, and contributions of new identities and memories, this 2nd, updated edition of the book was printed.

As of July 2022 The Stockport Museum at Staircase House in Market Street displays my donated prints in a permanent exhibition. This book is also available there.

Alongside signed copies of the 2nd edition (£24 + £3.50 pp UK), prints, postcard packs and signed copies of the 16 page zine of "Stockport Market" version by Cafe Royal Books are all available via the 'contact' page of my website.

POSTCARDS FROM THE AIR, 1972

After I discovered The Stockport Collection negatives in early 2020 I was spurred on to dig further into my 1970's analogue archive - especially the adventures I had wanted to remember and share with friends and family, the way we used postcards before we had the internet: "Look what I saw!"

Enter the talented Rob Shaw, of #robertshaw_design, that wonderful designer of #The Stockport Collection and #the_raw_society zines. His enthusiasm convinced me that we could make my dream of a small series of soft cover, 150x210mm (approximately A5 size) books a reality.

So this is No.1: "Postcards from the Air 1972" (36 pages), images from an extraordinary six-seater plane trip over Utah's Canyonlands and the Grand Canyon in the USA that my father had arranged for us in 1972. We saw places which no longer exist.

POSTCARDS FROM MOROCCO,1976

After finding The Stockport Collection negatives in early 2020 I started digging further into my analogue archive from my 1970's - especially the adventures I wanted to remember and share with friends and family the way we used postcards before we had the internet: "Look what I saw!"

So this is No.2, a substantial 60 page book containing images I made on an impulsive madcap road trip around Morocco in 1976 with a fellow Uni student in her Mini Clubman. My tattered diary reminded me of some details during the drive from Scotland, through England, France, Spain and then around Morocco. We covered 9'000km in just fifteen days, with some sketchy moments along the way.

These are 'postcards from the past', my past, properly edited with an introduction, maps and beautifully sequenced images.

RAW PHOTO FESTIVAL 2026
Alaior, Menorca, Spain

The inaugural RAW Photo Festival in Menorca was a triumph.

Eighteen exhibitions, numerous talks, presentations, and books by fellow RAW members, all packed into four days. It was non-stop and intense - in all the best possible ways for any participants, especially photographers.

What kept it thoroughly enjoyable was the intimacy: there was no velvet rope between me and the people who's work I've long admired, like @ibarionex @edkashi @juliewinokur @johnstanmeyer @lee.shulman @gulnara.samoilova as well as numerous talented fellow RAW members.

At any exhibition, cafe or restaurant in the centre of the pretty wee town of Alaior there were familiar faces I could easily join and strike up wonderful conversations with.

Especially delightful was meeting numerous RAW Society members who'd travelled from all over the world. After six years of zoom calls and social media messages - we were in one place and we KNEW each other!

Thank you @christelle_enquist and @jorgedelgadophoto and @mei_seva and @maariadela0 and all the volunteers for bringing us this extraordinary celebration of photography and storytelling.❤️

Edinburgh, March 2026

I've been getting several requests for head shots recently, and as much as I might enjoy the challenge and like the results, not every subject is up for social media posting.
Lucky for me the exception is one of my favourite subjects, and favourite singers, and, best of all, friend, @robyn.stapleton.
She chose the location, @nationaltrustforscotland Malleny Gardens in Balerno, new to me and perfect. Like Robyn. taken in Edinburgh Scotland by @heidiale

Edinburgh, April 2026

This is Richard Buckham, grandson of @alfredbuckham the daredevil pilot and creative photographer extraordinaire who's fabulous aviation images include the famous Edinburgh castle image (swipe left) we all love.

I met Richard today, on the final afternoon of the wonderful exhibition of Alfred's photography @nationalgalleriesscot curated by Louise Pearson. Richard chose this glorious backdrop for my portrait of him.

Richard and I shared a brief bond over that unique experience of bringing rediscovered photographic archives into the wider world. Thankfully, and lucky for us, Alfred kept everything.

My 'slow' photography with the Summilux lens included approaching strangers and asking to take their photo. There wasn't a single refusal - only lovely chats. These are some favourites.

1. The very charming Aiden at The Kings Arms in Shepherds Market who "comes here often" to do some work with his tablet and phone, alongside his pint.

2. Josephine @parkcameras Rathbone Place, who fixed my impossible camera strap and has beautiful tattoos.

3. Wayne, Danny and Clive, all Londoners, enjoying a post lunch cigarette, also at Shepherds Market.

4. Chris the black cab driver who spoke of his admiration for his wife, a barber, and his conviction that cabbies and barbers are what keep the world turning.

5. Julia who works in retail fashion and could sell ice-cream to Eskimos, as they say, with that smile and that accent. taken in London, England by @heidiale

My recent 'slow photography' with that old Summilux lens in London included day as well as night walks. And night bus rides - of course!

I think sometimes my eye was influenced by thoughts of those favourite artists like Saul Leiter. I often wonder how he would represent our current modern urban environment through his camera lens - if he could time travel.
(I doubt he'd want to.)

London, March 2026

I was in London recently, visiting exhibitions and doing 'slow photography' with my 70 yr old manual Summilux lens on my newer digital Fujifilm camera.

This is Molly at @hamiltonsgallery, currently showing work by Phillipe Garner, someone with a very interesting and varied background. (Check out his chat with our dear @martinparrstudio on YouTube.)

I thoroughly enjoyed this intimate, elegant gallery and found myself delighted by Garner's exquisite photographs. They remind me of several of my favourite photographers - Saul Leiter, Ernst Haas, Fred Herzog, Harry Gruyaert and Alex Webb - but with Garner's own unique aesthetic. The words warm, intriguing, artful, fun and sophisticated came to mind.
I'd welcome any and all of his gorgeous images on my walls in a heartbeat.

The show is only up until 31st March, and, amazingly Garner hasn't produced a book of his own colour work. Yet.
So, if you can, get yourself to @hamiltonsgallery quick.
