AirPods in. Life-is-a-movie feeling fully activated.

I came here curious about my roots and I’m leaving with reverence.

For the Tule tree.
For mineral water moving over stone for thousands of years.
For cacao, markets, art, mountains, bicycles, food, history, color, and story.

Being here deepened connection — to the earth, to history, to my family, to my story, and to the parts of myself that become easier to hear when I slow down enough to notice.

And somewhere along the way, another seed was planted:

I keep dreaming about bringing a small group back here someday for a Nervous System Tending retreat.

A retreat not about escaping your life, but arriving more fully inside it.

Time beneath an ancient tree.
Floating in mineral water.
Sharing cacao.
Making art.
Moving. Resting. Creating.
Exploring what in you is asking to be tended, what wants more room, what helps you feel rooted, and what makes you feel alive.

No forcing answers.
Just creating enough space, beauty, curiosity, and connection for something true to become audible.

I don’t know yet what it will become.

But Oaxaca has me dreaming.

Hasta luego. Thank you for tending something in me. ❤️#Oaxaca #TravelWithMeaning #CuriosityDeepensConnection #NervousSystemTending #RxForAdventure by @heidiklinedc

There have been so many moments on this trip when I’ve felt like I wanted to stop time for just a little while.

Today was one of them.

We went to Hierve el Agua, high in the mountains outside Oaxaca, where mineral-rich water has been flowing over the cliffs for thousands of years, creating formations that look like waterfalls turned to stone.

And then I got in.

I floated there under this enormous sky, mountains surrounding me, mineral water beneath me, and for a few minutes there was absolutely nowhere else I needed to be.

This trip has held so much already — food and markets, riding bicycles through the countryside, standing beneath a tree that has lived for more than 2,000 years, walking through museums and churches and streets filled with history, wondering about the people in my own family who came before me.

I came here curious about my roots.

But I think what I’ve been finding is something larger than an answer.

A feeling of connection.
To land.
To history.
To family.
To my own body moving through all of it.
To being here, now.

There is grief in looking backward. There is gratitude too.

And there is something about being held up by water in a place this ancient that makes you remember:

I am here.
I am alive.
And I get to experience this.

So grateful for this journey. 🇲🇽✨#HierveElAgua #Oaxaca #TravelWithMeaning #AncestralRoots RxForAdventure by @heidiklinedc

Today we rode bikes out from Oaxaca City to Santa María del Tule to see the Árbol del Tule an ancient ahuehuete estimated to be more than 2,000 years old, with a trunk about 14 meters across, considered the widest tree trunk in the world.

And standing there, I couldn’t help wondering:

Did any of my ancestors ever stand beneath this tree too?

Maybe they walked past it. Maybe they rested in its shade. Maybe it was already ancient to them.

There are stories wrapped around the tree as old as the landscape itself. One legend says it was planted by Pechocha, a priest associated with Ehécatl, the god of wind. Another tradition tells of the Mixe king Condoy, who drove his staff into the earth and the tree began to grow. Over generations, people have found shapes hidden in its enormous trunk like animals, faces, figures as though the tree has been collecting stories along with rings.

The word ahuehuete comes from Nahuatl and is often translated as “old man of the water,” fitting for a tree that thrives near water and has lived through centuries of human history.

Today we got there on mountain bikes. We rode through Oaxaca streets, farmland, agave fields, mud, hills, and little roads.

And along the way, we stopped near the Tule tree for the most delicious lunch: memela with chorizo, Mexican chocolate, and coffee. Yum.

A huge thank you to @bikeflowmx and our guide, Humberto — he was such a wonderful guide and such great company. He’s clearly a strong rider, but what I appreciated even more was how thoughtful he was with Kai, taking time with her and making sure the day worked for all three of us. It made the whole experience feel easy, fun, and special.

There is something moving about arriving by bicycle at a living thing that was already old long before the world my family eventually came to know existed.

Maybe my ancestors visited this tree too. 🌳🚲🇲🇽 #Oaxaca #ArbolDelTule #bikeOaxaca #AncestralConnection #MexicoTravel by @heidiklinedc

Today we spent almost four hours eating our way through Mercado de Abastos with Martha, and I’m not sure I could name everything we tried even if I tried. 😂

Fresh fruit and juice. Warm tortillas. Oaxacan cheese. Chocolate. Mezcal. Chicken. Empanadas. Squash blossom. Huitlacoche — the dark corn fungus sometimes called “Mexican truffle.” And chapulines in all kinds of flavors, which we even used to make an award-winning salsa.

One of the things Martha told us that stayed with me is that vendors come to this market from all over the different regions of Oaxaca. So walking through it felt like tasting pieces of the whole state in one place.

We stopped at stalls we never would have known how to find on our own, tried tejate, local breakfast foods, sweets, corn in more forms than I can count, and heard the stories behind so many of the ingredients.

What I loved most was that it didn’t feel like going somewhere to “try Mexican food.” It felt like being invited into a little piece of Oaxaca through food — the people, the market, the regions, the ingredients, and the generations of knowledge behind what we were eating.

Tomorrow, my family and I leave for Oaxaca, Mexico. 🇲🇽

I’ve been curious about my roots for a long time — where my family came from, what was carried forward, what was lost, and what still lives in us even when we don’t have words for it.

Last winter, while I was already exploring these questions, I read The Wild Edge of Sorrow by Francis Weller, which I highly recommend. He writes about five gates of grief, and one of them is ancestral grief.

That language helped me name something.

Within just a few generations, much of my connection to Mexico became distant. The language wasn’t passed down to me. Many traditions weren’t either.

And I keep thinking about how this connects to nervous system tending.

So much of that work begins with curiosity:

What am I carrying?
What was handed to me?
What feels familiar even when I don’t fully understand why?
What do I want to keep, reclaim, or relate to differently?

Not everything needs to be solved. Sometimes tending is simply creating enough space to notice, feel, and become curious about our own story.

So this trip feels like more than travel.

I want to see the land, hear the sounds, taste the food, experience the art and culture, and notice what happens in me when I am actually there.

I want to wonder about the people who came before me — what they loved, what they left behind, and what courage, necessity, grief, and hope shaped the choices that eventually led to me being here.

Maybe most of us have places in our family stories where something changed — where people left, adapted, assimilated, survived, or began again.

And maybe there is something powerful in meeting those places with curiosity instead of needing to have all the answers.

There is grief in what was lost.

But there can also be joy in discovering what is still available to us.

A place.
A food.
A story.
A tradition.
A sense of belonging.
A piece of ourselves we haven’t met yet.

I don’t know what Oaxaca will stir up in me.

I think part of nervous system tending is allowing myself not to know yet — and staying curious enough to listen. ❤️ #Oaxaca #ReclaimingRoots #HeritageAndBelonging by @heidiklinedc

The equinox offers a reminder that balance is not a fixed place we finally arrive at.

Life continually moves between expansion and rest, clarity and uncertainty, light and shadow. Wholeness makes room for all of it.

May this new season invite us to soften, stay rooted, and trust the unfolding. 🍂✨ #SeasonOfChange #FindingBalance #StayRooted #TrustTheUnfolding #NervousSystemTending by @heidiklinedc

I’m sharing this for anyone who loves someone they’ve also had to learn to create and hold boundaries with.

My mother loves me. And being in relationship with her has also been physically and emotionally painful. Love alone hasn’t made her capable of a relationship with real emotional safety and mutual intimacy.

I’ve learned that I can open a door to connection without pulling someone through it—and without abandoning the boundaries that keep my nervous system balanced. I can leave room for something different without creating a fantasy that someone will show up differently than they’re capable of.

I let myself hope. This is not a mistake.

Hope doesn’t have to be self-abandonment.

I don’t have to harden myself to have boundaries. In fact, that hope—and the boundaries I’ve learned to hold alongside it—have shaped how I show up in all of my relationships, with others and with myself: with curiosity, depth, compassion, safety, and room for real connection.

This is what healing looks like sometimes: feeling the hurt, tending to what it touches, and continuing forward. I find that each time I dig down into grief when it shows up, it leaves me with the gift of expanding higher and wider into the facets of love.

The love is real.
The hurt is real.
The limitations are real.
And so is the HOPE. ❤️

This rainy morning I’m creating my presentation for the Soul Care Retreat on October 17, and I’m getting even more excited about what’s taking shape.

I’ll be facilitating a conversation about the nervous system, stress, and resilience, including what happens in our bodies when we’ve been carrying too much for too long.

We’ll explore the autonomic nervous system, how stress can show up in the body, how we can begin learning our own body’s language, and simple ways to tend to our nervous systems in real time, right in the middle of everyday life.

And my session is just one part of the day. 💜

The Soul Care Retreat brings together several speakers and facilitators, along with opportunities for movement, creativity, time outdoors, connection, reflection, and a nourishing lunch together.

I’m so glad to be part of what Brittany is creating.

If this sounds like a day your nervous system could use, come spend the day with us.
