MOTHER/LAND 🩷🎶🌸

I was so excited to be part of composer Jeffery Ryan and librettist Michael MacLennan’s beautiful new work. They’ve brought the timeless story of Naomi and Ruth to life with such care through masterful dialogue and truly luminous music.

I’m truly honored to have been trusted to portray Ruth alongside this wonderful cast of musicians. Thank you Les for inviting me to be part of this special project.

April 12th, 2026 - Jesus saved me! 🫶🏼

If anyone knows what it’s like to wrestle with God, I promise it’s me. I never struggled with unbelief but never actually pursued an authentic relationship with Jesus. A couple years ago, he met me in a really spiritually empty season in my life. He pulled me out of my lukewarmness and completely transformed my heart and desires. In my true walk with Christ, I’ve experienced a kind of peace that the world has never been able to give me. I went from running from God, to running back to him again and again and again. I will never fully understand how God has been so patient with me over the years, but I am so grateful he was. 🤍 taken in First Assembly by @heidimduncan

Meet our star soloists for Mother/Land! ⭐️

HEIDI DUNCAN
Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, soprano Heidi Duncan is a recent alumna of Vancouver Opera’s Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist Program. During her residency, she performed as Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Frasquita in Carmen, Ida in Die Fledermaus, Alice in The Garden of Alice, and Annunciata in Lucrezia.

Other performance highlights include Annina in La Traviata, Laurie Moss in The Tender Land, Madame Herz in Der Schauspieldirektor, and Despina in Così fan tutte. Heidi has also performed as a soloist in concert programs across Ontario and British Columbia with Vancouver Opera, the Brott Music Festival, and the University of Toronto Wind Ensemble. In 2024, she advanced as a finalist in Opéra de Montréal’s Atelier lyrique Gala Competition.

She holds both a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music in Opera Performance from the University of Toronto and is also an alumna of the Brott Music Festival. Heidi is excited to make her debut with the Vancouver Bach Choir as Ruth in the world premiere of Jeffrey Ryan’s Mother/Land.

There are no words to describe the pain of losing my sweet girl, Ellie. I could never have imagined how hard these last few days would be, and I’m unsure how to move forward without my best friend.

On Wednesday, I came home from a short trip to Toronto and, within a couple of hours, Ellie had taken a turn for the worst. The hardest decision of my life had to be made. Time is such a thief and I wish more than anything to have had more of it to say goodbye.

Ellie was the sweetest, gentlest, cuddliest little chihuahua, and everyone who met her loved her. She was spunky and full of funny little quirks that always kept me on my toes. She was with me through my darkest moments-cheering me up, making me laugh, and showering me with unconditional love. She was truly everything.

She was every dream come true, every wish made on my birthday candles since I was seven years old. She was the absolute light of my life, and I will spend forever missing her sweet presence.

September 24th was the hardest and worst day of my life, but I know she is at peace, no longer suffering and now enjoying all the cheerios her heart desires.

My sweet girl Ellie- thank you for 13 wonderful years of love and friendship. We lived the best life journey together. I know God takes care of all that is good that He creates, and I know you’re up there patiently waiting for your family. Until we’re together again, I’ll carry you with me always. 🌈🪽🩷🐾 taken in Calgary, Alberta by @heidimduncan

Goodbye VO… 🧡🎶

And just like that, my time as a Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist has come to a close. It’s hard to put into words what this experience has meant to me. Over the past two seasons, I’ve grown so much in my confidence and artistic ability as a singer. I’ve had the joy (and challenge) of diving into incredible roles, sharing the stage with inspiring colleagues, reconnecting with old friends, and building new friendships that I’ll treasure forever.

A heartfelt thank you to Les Dala, Tina Chang, Jacques Lacombe, Tom Wright and Kewen Huang for your mentorship, encouragement, and for believing in me. And to the entire VO production team- you’re all rockstars! To my fellow young artists- Simran, Jeremy, Sawyer, Tayte, Danlie, Lyndon, Derek, and Indra- I couldn’t ask for a more fun and supportive group of musicians to make music with.
