"Čimavica" / "Tuft of Dry Grass", 2026
140 x 120 cm
oil paint, marker, dry pastel and wool on canvas

Čimavica refers to the small traces of the field that cling to the body and clothes while working the land. In everyday speech, čimavica can also describe someone who keeps bothering you or something that lingers and is difficult to shake off.

"Crni patuljak (a šta ćemo sad)" / "Black Dwarf (So What Do We Do Now)", 2026.
160 x 120 cm
oil and wool on burlap

A black dwarf is the hypothetical final state of a white dwarf—a star that has cooled so completely that it no longer emits significant light or heat. None are believed to exist yet, as the universe itself is not old enough: something no longer luminous, yet still physically present.

Wool carries multiple symbolic and cultural connotations. Deeply rooted in the traditions of the Dalmatian hinterland, it is closely associated with craftsmanship and women’s lived experience. Within these works, it becomes a carrier of memory, continuity, and collective identity. Its softness and layered structure evoke protection and comfort, while also suggesting tension, weight, and the accumulation of lived experience.

The series reflects on inhabiting the Mediterranean landscape—its sun, wind, sea, and rugged karst islands—as a layered and fragmented form of memory. Rather than being depicted directly, these experiences become embedded in the structure of the works, suspended between abstraction and faintly suggested figuration.

Rather than being depicted directly, these experiences become embedded in the very structure of the works, remaining suspended between abstraction and only faintly suggested figuration.

some analog photos from college while preparing for the exhibition and a voice memo from Sofia, 5 years old (sound on.)

there is a lot of noise going around about how life should be lived and what are the right choices to make. its important to step away for a moment and reflect on which values truly matter to you. most advice comes from a place of care; people share what has worked for them and what they believe to be true. but 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 looks different for everyone. time is not linear, and no path is universal. time is never wasted taken in Zagreb, Croatia by @helena.birin

Through painting and its expanded media possibilities, Helena Birin (b. 1996) explores fragility, transience, and adaptation within contemporary life, approaching these themes from an intimate perspective while observing tradition as an important reference point for understanding the present.
She is currently completing her graduate studies in Art Education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, and her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Croatia and abroad, including Lauba, SC Gallery, and the Bauhaus Museum in Dessau.

A selection of photographs capturing moments leading up to the opening, as well as periods of intense work. // The exhibition “Šalji dalje: SOL” brings together a series of works created over the past six months, along with several pieces developed in recent years. In this way, the exhibition loosely rounds off the graduate studies period, reflecting a process of thought and the evolution of experimentation with medium and material.

The body of work subtly engages with the experience of time spent in the Mediterranean — the sun, wind, sea and karst islands — not through literal representation, but as layered and fragmentary memory. These impressions are indirectly embedded in the structure of the works, hovering between abstraction and only faintly suggested figuration.

The exhibition is conceived as an ambient whole, where each piece functions as a fragment of a broader narrative.

Saznat ćemo uskoro ❤ by @helena.birin

A huge thank you as well to everyone who helped with the organization, the production of the event, and with handling me (and my nerves) throughout it all.
And finally, thank you Bepo for the beautiful photographs that captured everything so perfectly.

🕘 Otvorenje: 13.4. u 21h

📅 13. — 14.4.2026.
🕐 Radno vrijeme izložbe: 11 — 19h
🎟 Ulaz slobodan
