Here it is! My next book, LONELINESS IS A MOLECULE, which is coming out in Australia this September with Picador (@macmillanaus)! With a beautiful cover by the amazing @hazellam___ 🤍🤍🤍

This book has been a lifeline for me, a place to explore my grief and other big, big feelings after trauma, a place to learn about myself, a place to let go, and a place to create a character who isn’t me and walk with her as she makes her way through something impossible.

Here it is. Here’s Miri. 🤍

“Miri was whole, once. She had a best friend, once. She knew who she was - or she thought she did.

But now she is a million lonely molecules, flying through the air to a new life on the other side of the world. Rome is light and loud and cobblestones and gelaterias and ancient buildings next to modern ones. Rome is new people and a chance to get out of her head. Or is it into her head she needs to go, to find herself again?

A poetic novel about friendship, family, forgiveness, trauma, love and happiness from an incomparable author.”

Preorder (for Australian/NZ copies!) at the link 🤍🤍🤍

“We're all moving and nothing is ever lost and there's always the chance of something else coming, maybe something better.”

There is something quietly devastating about reading a story of someone trying to rebuild a life around something that should never have happened to them. Even more so when you learn that the author was also coming to grips with her own trauma and experience of sexual violence. I could never claim to know the depth of what a survivor feels. The grief, confusion, fear, or lasting weight of it. But through this book, Helena Fox gave me a glimpse of this experience. This was a story of friendship, family, trauma, and finding your way back to happiness.

Miri carried the weight of sexual violence from when she was 15. The novel never looked away from the reality of trauma. All of the silence, isolation, grief, and exhaustion of pretending to be okay was there. There were so many moments I wanted to reach through the pages and hold her. To tell her she was safe. To be someone she could trust. Especially in Rome, where my heart ached for the girl she once was and for the friendship she lost. What do you do with a love and memories that becomes tangled with harm? And how do you make peace with someone who left this world before they could ever ask for forgiveness?

What moved me most was the book’s understanding of healing. It was something found in the smallest spaces, like small conversations, postcard pictures, friendship, cobblestone streets, and a voice finally finding the courage to speak. Through Tahlia, Tad, and the new places she experienced, Miri slowly rebuilt herself. She never forgot what happened, but discovered it did not have to define all that she became. The writing captured the experience of surviving, but even more than that, it highlighted what comes after: the tiny, stubborn moments of hope, the possibilities of happiness, the courage to take a step.

“Maybe we don't actually have to think about happiness? Maybe we just absorb it as we look at other things … Maybe it just finds us sometimes.”

What book did you start reading this week?

I got home from Naarm/Melbourne ten days ago. The very next day, my back went out, totally out, almost-completely-unable-to-walk out. I thought it might get better sooner and even went to an event four days later, but my body soon told me just how silly that was. So I think I’m in for the long-ish haul. I’m writing this from the couch, making my way through time. Slow time, mostly alone time, napping every day, usually with my little orange companion. Surreal to go from so very busy to stopped.

I’ve been trying to do some work, but have been sleeping and resting mostly. In moments of clarity and when the pain isn’t too loud, I’ve been reading WAIT HERE, by @lucyjadenelson. An absolutely beautiful, delicate, tender and brilliant collection of short stories. So, so well done, Lucy. 🥰

I also just bought CUL DE SAC by the wonderful @eleanor_limprecht, who I got to meet when she came down to Thirroul last week ☺️ We talked a little about the intersection of our books, about coercive control and DV and the trauma and confusion of being abused by someone you love. I have also been following the Cornell case, which has been heartbreaking. Long days, in pain, reading the accounts of women who have been assaulted and weren’t supported by institutions and systems that were supposed to help them be safe. 💔 I stand with these women; my heart goes out to you all, I am here with you.

My back is not really anywhere near better, so for now, my days are very quiet, while all around me, life whirls—violence and grief and hard memories and thunderstorms and migrating moths—a tumult I can’t control. And, also, right now, there is a cup of tea beside me. A cat close by. Blanket. Morning light. Sound of birds. by @helenafoxoz

I am a victim-survivor of gendered sexual violence. I walk beside the millions of others. I am here with you. I stand with you. 🤍

Here are the books Mischa has been loving this month! 🌹

Bodies of Magic by Freya Marske — Dark academia, murder and magic collide in this atmospheric fantasy mystery. Perfect for readers who love secrets, intrigue and a touch of the sinister.

Deena Helm’s Our Cut of Salt is a haunting Palestinian story of family, grief and supernatural horror. Atmospheric and unsettling, it’s a beautifully eerie read.

In The Strangers, Naomi Alderman delivers something wonderfully strange—a speculative story about mysterious creatures, grief, motherhood and what it means to be human.

Loneliness Is a Molecule by Helena Fox is a tender, thoughtful novel about loss, identity and finding your way back to yourself. A quiet story with plenty of heart.

With Chinese mythology, ghosts and gods, Between Ghosts and Gods by Ann Sei Lin is an immersive YA fantasy full of adventure, danger and questions about what makes a life worth living.

Will Kostakis brings plenty of charm and magic to Otis Ottley and the School in the Sky—a joyful adventure about belonging, bravery and discovering that ordinary kids can do extraordinary things.
