Diving in Djibouti is a rare experience far from the crowds of better known dive destinations. This was what we were looking for on this trip ... BUT I wish I had known a few things before I decided to go: • Booking diving liveaboards all over the world, I'm used to a certain standard - I was very naive to assume this would be the case in Djibouti as well (I'm talking about safety, not fancy boats). The boat was in such a bad shape, that we left the harbour 1 day delayed and I was wondering, if we would make it back in time for our flight back home ...  --> I'm not sure if there are better options, but I would read the boat reviews carefully and get suspicious, if there are none with a "not new" boat • The lack of organisation and communication was very frustrating - we never knew what the plan is until we experienced it (itinerary, count of dives, meal times, ...) --> I guess you just have to go with the flow and maybe bring snacks • The dive guide on board has never seen the divesites before. He made the briefings with a book on board, that was published around 30 years ago. After a few days the guide quit and the captain took over - but he lost all divers underwater after 10 min 😅 --> the diving is easy, but bring a SMB and be prepared to guide yourself • Visibility underwater was pretty bad... Sometimes only 5-10m what makes it hard to follow the group or actually spot marine life. I guess we could have avoided the really bad visibility dive sites, but that brings us back to the lack of organisation and experienced dive guide 😉 • Our trip was meant to be a "whale shark cruise", since its the start of the season. But we did not see a single whaleshark on this trip 🥲 --> maybe it was too early or they don't come anymore!? Knowing that, I would probably pick a later date to have a chance of seeing them I can not tell you, if choosing a different boat / operator would make a difference, but if you are interested, I can let you know, which boat not to pick 😉 Let me know, if you have questions! #africa #djibouti #diving #liveaboard #travelongmakesyouricher by @helirockt
