Invitation Homes has turned California housing into a Texas-based corporate revenue stream—buying up homes Californians need, collecting California rents, and operating company vehicles on California roads.

The photograph accompanying this review shows an Invitation Homes van working here with Texas plates. If these vehicles are principally operated or based in California, Invitation Homes should explain why they are not registered here. Californians pay registration fees, taxes, and other costs that help support the roads and communities we all use. A multibillion-dollar corporate landlord should not appear to be playing by a different set of rules.

There is a bitter irony in a Texas corporation extracting wealth from California homes while its Texas-plated vehicles use California roads and contribute to California traffic and pollution. Invitation Homes is happy to profit from this state. It should be equally willing to invest in it, comply fully with its requirements, and pay its fair share.

California is not merely a market to be harvested. These are our homes, our roads, our air, and our communities.
