Hi everyone! This is just a quick announcement that Hellebore is pausing submissions. Submissions received before today, March 10, are unaffected. Thank you to everyone who queried us; we know a good query takes a ton of time, and we appreciate your hard work. 🩷

If you didn’t get your query in, be sure to give us a follow so you’re the first to know when we reopen submissions. For those who don’t know, we are looking for self-published fiction, from picture books to new adult.

We are thrilled to be working with some amazing authors and helping their stories reach other countries! 🌏

We are SO excited to announce the creation of Hellebore Literary Agency! 🥳🍾

It all started when four book publishing professionals learned that self-published authors often miss out on opportunities to sell their book because of the nature of the non-traditional route. Embodying the spirit of decentralization and demystification, Hellebore was born to help self-published authors reach new audiences through selling their rights to translation in foreign markets.

So, if you’re a self-published author with a successful YA/NA novel and you’re interested in tapping into the full market potential of your book, we want to hear from you! And if you’re a non-US publisher looking for the next hidden gem for your audiences, let’s get in touch! Check out our website (link in bio) or shoot us an email for more info. We’re so excited to start this journey with you! 😁🤝

The Japanese translation of LE PETIT PRINCE translates to THE STAR PRINCE—pretty close to the original. But if you hear the title THE TALE OF YOUNG GRASS, you probably don’t think of LITTLE WOMEN. Turns out, the former is the title of the latter in Japanese! 🌱

In her debut blog for Hellebore, Angela explains localization, the changes that a work undergoes to become the most effective for the target audience, in the context of English-to-Japanese title translations.

“The Three Billy Goats Gruff” also has a cute, not-direct translation. Check it out at the link in our bio 🔗

In Jackie’s recent blog for Hellebore, she breaks down the relationship between subrights, foreign rights, and translation rights.

Here’s a nifty little graphic to help you visualize. 🌸
