Happy birthday to our board member @helleborus_studio 🖤

Kevin is beloved amongst this community and has contributed both guidance and mentorship to our volunteers and set building crew. He is a skilled carpenter (check his page out) who designed and lead the crew who built our entry way gate for the @rvarenfaire, the largest set build this organization has ever taken on.

We love Kevin very much for his kind, genuine, and supportive nature. He will be spending his birthday at Warriors in Bloom with us serving as a liaison to vendors. If you’re working or attending today, make sure you say hello and a big ole happy birthday to him.

Sorry to have to take it all down, but the first @rvarenfaire is over. Just wanted to give everyone a brief walkthrough and look at the art of the entryway just before we started dismantling it. This weekend was an incredible mix of things -- emotionally charged, fun, fantasy, crazy Richmond spring weather, great art, food, and a whole lot of really cool people. Lots of feelings happening right now, as I sit in the silence before our second-to-last work session on the set for the Richmond Ren Faire. It's been an incredibly busy, but fulfilling and deeply meaningful few months. Spending time with a bunch of amazingly talented, humble and dedicated people has truly made me so happy to be a part of this project. This next week, and the weekend of the faire, will be the culmination of so many hours of planning, dreaming, meeting, coordinating, building, painting, fixing, adjusting and touching up. But it's not just that -- those are just things. We're looking to bring an experience. I want to thank everyone who spent even five minutes on this work -- for many, if not most of you, it was hours and hours more. Thank you to my family, who (I hope) understand that this isn't just a means for me to get out of the house. It's a creative outlet, an obsession, a passion I've had trouble maybe finding ways to engage in over the last several years. It feels good. It feels like something I've been needing to do. Thank you, @viragoalley for entrusting the leadership of this project to me. Some people do not just show up. They show up with grace, reliability, and a kindness that makes everything feel a little warmer. They bring not only talent and perspective, but also patience and unmatched accountability.

Today, we want to recognize Kevin Barry.

A massive heart. A nurturing soul. An incredible parent. A dedicated board member for Virago Alley. A true visionary with impeccable character.

He has led a massive crew in the build up to Ren Faire, designing our grand entryway and recognizing the unique talents of everyone involved. With patience and intention, he has welcomed new volunteers and helped bring them into the magic in the making.

We could not have asked for a better person to help build this community behind the scenes. Kevin, thank you for understanding the assignment and consistently rising to the occasion. Your impact runs deep, and your fan base is bigger than you know. by @helleborus_studio

Yesterday we wrapped our first official set building day 🔨🪵🪚

Special shout out to Board member, Kevin Barry (@helleborus_studio) for thoughtfully crafting this design for the Faire’s entranceway. Not only will this piece be elaborate and architecturally beautiful, but it is engineered to be modular to suite our needs year over year.

Thank you to the Set Design Committee volunteers who came out to help yesterday! We are grateful for this community of doers that stand behind this initiative. This event is literally being built from the ground up and we appreciate everyone involved in bringing this vision to life.

Jewelry chest. Cherry with hand drawn ink design on milk paint, finished overall with boiled linseed oil. 14"W x 20"H x 10"D

It's been a long time since I posted anything. This Instagram page, Helleborus Studio (@helleborus_studio), will now serve as my personal art/inspiration page, since my business partner and I have launched a rebranding of our furniture and cabinet company. More on that later. (@truefurnituremakers if you want to check it out now. )

What's special about this chest? Not only do I think it turned out pretty well, but it's made in celebration of 25 years of marriage. The story is, I began making Kathryn a jewelry chest out of walnut not long after we married. At the time, I had neither the tools nor the skill for much fine work. It was clunky, chunky and not well proportioned. I was a trim carpenter, but not really a jointer or cabinet maker back then. Over the years, the Mrs has asked in mostly subtle ways if she'd ever have the jewelry chest I promised her all that time ago. Don't you hate the costs associated with constantly upgrading your space station? Now taking applications for a five year voyage to the rings around Saturn. $2,000 application fee, non refundable, in small, unmarked bills.

Craftsman/Arts and Crafts style occasional table. Quarter sawn white oak and clean lines are what this table are all about. It might be small, but I love the amount of detail involved. This was commissioned by Jan @obscurojewelry here in Richmond. She and her sister, Jill, make amazing and unique pieces of jewelry. Go check them out!
