The Japanese have a name for immersing yourself in nature: *shinrin-yoku*, or forest bathing. 🍂🌲 And fall around here is the perfect time for it!

Located just outside Salem, Poor Mountain Natural Area Preserve has two hiking trails to explore: the one-mile Piratebush Loop Trail and the more challenging four-mile Canyon Trail.

And here’s a fun fact: Poor Mountain is home to the world’s largest known population of piratebush, one of the rarest shrubs in eastern North America! 🌿 This unusual plant is found in only a handful of locations across Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, with more growing on Poor Mountain than in all other known populations combined.

Nothing says Roanoke like @roanokegofest. The ultimate downtown celebration of everything that makes this city awesome.

📍 Downtown Roanoke (Elmwood Park): This is where you’ll find most of the festival action, including BMX stunt shows, lumberjack competitions, rock climbing, paddleboard and kayak demos, live music, outdoor vendors, food, and activities for all ages.

📍 Explore Park: The Adventure Outpost is where you’ll catch the Ultimate Air Dogs diving show, try a Ninja Warrior course, check out mountain bike demos, and even test kayaks on the Roanoke River on Saturday.

Best of all, GO Fest is FREE to attend, and there’s a free shuttle running between both locations on Saturday and Sunday.

The Miller family recently moved to Roanoke, and luckily for us, they brought their scratch-made donuts along with them! 🍩

For several summers, Myrna, Kevin, and their four kids made and sold donuts in local parks in Chewelah, Washington, as a family hobby. Their donuts were so popular that they decided to bring the fun to their new community by launching their donut trailer, Family Fry-Day Donuts! And the name says it all: The Miller family will continue to run the business together.

Every donut starts with scratch-made dough and is hand-shaped, fried, and finished with a sweet vanilla glaze. Stop by early, and you’ll likely get one while it’s still warm!

“We’re excited to get going here, meet people, and get our name out there,” Myrna says.

65 years of Towers Shopping Center! 🗼

We’re taking a trip down memory lane with former Roanoke Mayor and local historian Nelson Harris and WDBJ7 reporter @jdashiell7.

This week marks the anniversary of Towers Shopping Center’s grand opening at Colonial Avenue and Brandon Avenue. On October 12, 1961, the Virginia Chronicle announced: ‘Giant Shopping Center Is Opened.’ 🛍️

Named for the @wdbj7 television and radio towers located on the site, this two-level strip mall was the first split-level shopping center in Roanoke and one of the largest in Virginia.

From original tenants like High’s Ice Cream, A&P Grocers, Woolworth’s, People’s Drug, JCPenney, Heironimus, and Mick-or-Mack to the businesses that call it home today, Towers has remained a local landmark for generations.

This local nonprofit is tackling critical home renovations to create safer, healthier communities throughout the Roanoke Valley. 🏡

Since 1999, @renovate_all has brought volunteers and communities together to rebuild homes for persons in need, and we recently had the opportunity to visit one of their current projects: transforming a duplex into permanent, affordable housing for individuals transitioning out of homelessness. It was inspiring to meet the team working hard to turn this house into a home for someone who needs it!

Want to learn more about the incredible work Renovation Alliance is doing? Join us for the premiere of the upcoming @buzz4good episode featuring the nonprofit on Tuesday, October 27, at 6 PM at the @grandintheatre!
