Some places don’t need reinventing.

Johnny’s Reef has been feeding generations of New Yorkers at the very end of City Island since 1950. You order at the counter, find a table by the water, and settle in with paper trays piled high with fried shrimp, clams, oysters, fish, fries and coleslaw.

Five friends. A ridiculous amount of fried seafood. A beautiful summer day on City Island.

A big thank you to Ted, Will and Johnny for a terrific lunch. And to @gabriellekarikas for helping me arrange it all.

Thank you Jaiden for sharing a bit of history while boxing up our pastries.

Worth knowing… Bonrue Bakery was founded by three Las Vegas chefs who bonded over great food. One of them, Chris Herrin, trained under Thomas Keller at French Laundry. He passed away just months after they opened.

The other two chefs kept going. They bake in his honor every single day.

Making @mangiawithmichele pea soup recipe!
Had everything… except the ham. 😞

Snowstorm grocery crawl:
Whole Foods: closed.
Trader Joe’s: salmon (only salmon) in the meat/fish case.
Key Food: ham steaks = good enough.🤔

Could’ve used bacon. Didn’t.
This isn’t Michele’s perfect version—but on a snowy day, it works.

Now: to make her recommended croutons 🥖

Do you remember the cannoli tour—comparing shell, filling, and overall balance across New York City?

I still go out to Brooklyn to @villabatealba since that day. Their cannoli stood out then, and it still does. And I always have a cappuccino or macchiato at the counter with all the men speaking Italian.

The difference is the ricotta: sheep’s milk, imported from Sicily. It’s lighter, deeper in flavor, and it changes everything to the delicious!!

At home, enjoying a small cheese board tonight with @la4robe. Serving an aged Gouda and aged Prima Donna cheese with figs in balsamic and @crabbytabby325 devine homemade peach preserves. So delicious Lisa, 🙏

Downtown Manhattan’s Taco Revolution 🌮

I read @rsietsema’s substack piece and instantly felt that curiosity to try everything on his list!.

So yesterday (yesterday the coldest day of the year so far!) I grabbed my friend @laurencewaltman, bundled up, and we wandered through downtown in search of the tacos he wrote about. Cold hands, warm tortillas, and one of those catch-up conversations you don’t realize you needed. 😊

Here’s where we went on Round One:

• Carnitas Ramirez — the classic, deeply seasoned carnitas that anchor the whole list. Loved them.

• Yellow Rose — heritage pork carnitas with avocado (lush and bright)

• Santo Taco — carne asada (my favorite) steak trompo, + Zucchini.

We didn’t get to all the spots, so Round Two is already planned to happen soon. anyone else want to come?

It’s turkey time. 🦃✨

I’ve been following farmers Abra Morawiec and Chris Pinto of @feistyacres Acres for years—wherever their pasture-raised specialty poultry takes me. I’ve picked up my Thanksgiving turkey in @unsqgreenmarket … one memorable year in a shoe store on the UWS… out on the North Fork… and now, for the last few years, at the #grandarmyplazagreenmarket

And every single trip? Worth it.

I’ve roasted their birds whole, but my favorite (and now annual) ritual is making a turkey ballotine—completely deboned, stuffed, rolled, and roasted. Mine gets filled with a Swiss chard + sausage stuffing that perfumes the whole apartment.

Feisty Acres’ commitment to uncompromising quality shows up in every bite. Truly some of the most delicious poultry you’ll ever taste.

Great haircut at @joondrop, thank you Julie, and then a slow wander next door into @alisoneroman First Bloom pop-up grocery on Hester Street.

It’s a beautifully edited little world: fresh fruits and veggies, shelves of various tinned fish, my new favorite crackers from Potter’s Table Farm, pastas, sauces, chips, jarred olives… and much more. Non edibles include an incredible halawa candle from Magasin Générale that smells like orange blossoms blooming in Morocco.

And don’t miss the imaginative ceramics by @janiekorn.

If you love discovering well-curated foods and makers, this is a joyful stop.
