Stretch before or after activity?

Research suggests that stretching before a sporting activity, especially static stretching (holding a stretch for an extended period), can be counterproductive and potentially harmful. Here’s why:

1. Reduced Muscle Performance 💪🏾:

- Static stretching before exercise has been shown to temporarily reduce muscle strength, power, and explosive performance. This is because prolonged stretching can decrease the muscle’s ability to produce force, which may impair performance in activities that require power, speed, or agility.

2. Increased Risk of Injury 🩼:

- When muscles are cold, static stretching can lead to microscopic tears in muscle fibers. Without adequate warm-up, the muscles are less pliable, making them more prone to injury during stretching or subsequent activity. This can be particularly concerning in sports that involve sudden or intense movements.

3. Inadequate Warm-Up 🥶:

- Stretching alone does not increase muscle temperature or blood flow significantly, which are essential for preparing muscles and joints for intense physical activity. Dynamic warm-ups, which involve controlled movements that gradually increase in intensity, are more effective at priming the body for exercise.

4. Negative Impact on Neuromuscular Efficiency🧠🏋️‍♀️:

- Stretching before exercise can interfere with the muscle’s neuromuscular coordination, leading to slower reaction times and diminished performance. This may be due to the inhibitory effect static stretching has on the central nervous system, temporarily dampening muscle responsiveness.

Research supports the use of dynamic warm-ups, which involve active movements that mimic the activity to be performed, as a more effective way to prepare the body for physical exertion while reducing the risk of injury and optimizing performance. #physicalTherapyNYC #PhysicalTherapy #sports #BrooklynSports #WilliamsburgSports #Stretching #SportsPhysicalTherapy #Orthopedics #HSSnetwork #MountSinaiHealthNetwork taken in BROOKLYN BODY WORKS PHYSICAL THERAPY, P.C. by @hello_melodpt

🐝 Bee VENOM good for scar tissue?

Back story - One day a patient of mine went to South America for a wedding. She had 2 TKA (total knee replacement) and a RSA (Reverse shoulder arthroplasty). Having scars is nothing new to her. She was laughing and drinking with her family and her sister-in-law made a joke about getting a bee to sting her scars so she could look better. She told me the story and was laughing. However that was way too specific for me…so I looked it up and here we are…

🐝. Anti-inflammatory Properties:

Melittin, a major component of bee venom, has strong anti-inflammatory effects. It can help reduce the inflammation that often accompanies scar tissue formation, potentially leading to a reduction in the size and severity of scars.

🐝 Collagen Production Regulation:

Bee venom may help regulate collagen production. Proper collagen regulation is crucial for healing without excessive scarring. Some studies suggest that bee venom can promote balanced collagen production, which may help in the formation of smoother and less visible scars.

🐝 Wound Healing Acceleration:

Bee venom has been shown to accelerate wound healing in some studies. Faster healing can mean less time for scars to develop, and the resulting scars may be less pronounced.

🐝 Antioxidant Effects:

The antioxidant properties of bee venom can protect cells from oxidative stress, which may help in minimizing scar formation by reducing the damage caused during the wound healing process.

🐝 Antimicrobial Properties:

Bee venom has antimicrobial effects, which can help prevent infection in healing wounds. This is crucial because infections can lead to more significant scarring. Check out my linked in for more…

Sometimes when working on scar tissue we notice the scar rejecting or pushing something out (very common with TKA).

It tends to be a spot that’s extra sharp pain “like a small needle”. You will notice as you work on the scar there will be a white undiscovered stitch that can possibly come out.

Many times it’s surrounded and encapsulated in the scar tissue and remains causing pain. Gentle scar tissue work and it will come out relieving pain, decreasing swelling and improving AROM.

Of course prior to doing this make sure there are no red flags (ex, infection) and prevent them from getting any.

I will follow up later with updated photos but these are from this week!
