Anyone who knows me well would tell you that I am not an animal person, but something changed this month thanks to the dogs at the Tinajo Perrera. When @linesusan told me about how the dogs used in the Canary Islands for hunting were just abandoned at the end of the season - because they were too old, too slow, or simply it was cheaper to buy a new one next season - it made me so sad, and after meeting these sweethearts I genuinely can’t begin to comprehend this behaviour.Over the past few weeks I’ve walked Lilo (who liked to stop and sniff absolutely everything), Mirri (a beautiful Podenco who was so well behaved), Simba (who broke my heart when he didn’t want to go back after our walk), and Nieve (who enjoys overturning giant rocks).The perrera currently has 17 dogs, and they’re only walked three times a week when there are people to volunteer. Spending a few hours with them has honestly been one of the highlights of my time on the island.They’re such lovely dogs, and they deserve so much more than a kennel and a few walks a week.If you’re in Lanzarote and interested in volunteering, or based elsewhere and interested in finding out more about adoption, send me a message and I’ll point you in the right direction 🫶 by @helloamieliane
