Hi Beesties, it’s spooky season!👻🎃

October is the perfect time for scares, thrills, and all the terrifying stories and creatures you can imagine. So for this month’s writing challenge, we’re stepping into the horror and thriller genre.

Each week, challenge yourself to share a piece of writing in the genre. It could be flash fiction, a longer story, poetry, or anything else that lets you explore something eerie, suspenseful, or downright terrifying.

If horror or thriller is outside your comfort zone, this is your chance to stretch those writing muscles and try something different. And if this is already your comfort zone, then please, stay comfortable. 😂

Why this challenge matters: experimenting with a different genre can show you, your audience, and even yourself just how versatile you can be. You may even discover something new about your writing along the way.

Having your materials organized helps the review team understand your book, your goals, and exactly where you are in the publishing process.
That means making sure your current manuscript is ready, your title and author details are updated, your synopsis and bio are available, and any relevant cover ideas, images, formatting notes, or specific questions are included.

The more context you provide upfront, the easier it is to give you useful, focused feedback and keep the next steps moving.

Once your book is out in the world, the next chapter begins.
You keep talking about it.
You keep finding new ways to reach readers.
You keep writing, creating, and working toward whatever comes next.

Some progress will be easy to see. Other times, it may look like one new review, one reader message, one sale, one event, or one person discovering your work for the first time.

The goal is not overnight success. It is steady growth, stronger habits, continued learning, and building a body of work over time.
And while you are focused on what comes next, do not forget to celebrate the small wins along the way.

Publishing a book is a big accomplishment, but building a life around your writing happens one step at a time.

New Podcast Alert 🎙️
Beestie Besties with J and Lo Episode 12 is OUT!

This episode, J and Lo are joined by author, screenwriter, and storyteller Ryan Brison.

Ryan shares the inspiration behind one of his children’s books, which was inspired by his six-year-old son, Ayden, and his experience as a parent thinking about energy, attention, and how storytelling can help children see themselves differently.

The conversation also gets into creativity, self-publishing, learning to take feedback, finding the right people to work with, and trusting your own process as a writer.

J and Lo also tackle a question authors ask all the time: can your friends and family leave reviews for your book? They talk Amazon, Goodreads, genuine reviews, and why it’s important to keep collecting reviews beyond launch day.

And for this episode’s Beestie Bestie story, we meet Scratch, the miniature pinscher J and Lo bought together as teenagers without exactly telling their parents first. From sneaking him around in a bag to his tiny spike collar and their plans to train him to attack on the word “pink,” Scratch definitely became part of the adventure. 😂🐾

A Love Story in the Time of the Great War follows Philip Boughton and Doris Bowman, a young couple whose romance unfolds against the backdrop of World War I and the uncertain years that follow.
Inspired by the author’s own grandparents, the story explores love, separation, hope, and the way history can shape even the most personal parts of our lives.

The Gods of Whatever by Yhali Ilan takes readers in a completely different direction, following Dog as he wanders, sniffs, rambles, and introduces us to the many gods he has discovered along the way.
