A few years ago the whole ‘Madison is growing up’ thing had me a little wrecked. Baby to toddler, just like that. Then in her soft little sing-song voice, she looked at me and said, ‘don’t be sad, because I will just not grow up, I will just only stay small, so you can just be happy.’

Fast forward a couple years and here we are, a few days before kindergarten starts, and she officially starts down a pathway that won’t stop until she’s all grown up.

This whole week I’ve been tamping down a bunch of feelings, almost like mourning the loss of her childhood or something. It sounds so extreme, it’s not like she stops being our sweet little kid just because she starts school. It’s crazy, I know, but it just doesn’t feel like it’ll be the same, and we’re walking across a threshold we can’t step back through again.

It truly feels like the day we loaded her into her carseat for the first time was last weekend. But here we are, loading her into that same car, except now she buckles herself in.

Sometimes growing up feels like goodbye.

She didn’t stay small like she promised, but instead grew into something even better. She’s this bright little light, this entire person with her own thoughts and her own seatbelt-buckling independence. She’s confident, she’s kind, and she loves harder than anyone.

And to Megan: we got her here. It was a lot, but we did it. For five years, we’ve been the whole world to her. Now that world’s expanding, but we’re not going anywhere. We’re just part of a bigger map now.

So yes, sometimes growing up feels like goodbye, but maybe that’s the trick of it. Every ‘goodbye’ is really just a ‘hello’ to the next kid she’s becoming. And from where I’m standing, that kid is pretty incredible.

My favorite part of the day had nothing to do with the scenery, the sunset, the literally perfect aesthetics of the north coast. It was the stack of letters from family and friends they read to each other before the ceremony, handwriting crammed into every margin because apparently everyone who loves these two had a lot to say.

So thankful to spend the day with these two lovey babes for their elopement at Timber Cove.

I quit scrolling other wedding photographers for inspiration years ago. All it did was spike my anxiety and keep the same handful of ideas getting passed around the community kinda like a drink nobody ordered.

So I found new sources: films, street photographers, art magazines that have nothing to do with weddings.

This shot of the gents owes its whole vibe to @wmbrownmagazine.

If you only ever look at people doing your job, you’ll only ever make what they’re already making. Go look somewhere nobody in your industry is looking. That’s where the good stuff is.

An open letter to Jess and Jaison’s people -

You guys really struck the friendship lottery with these two. Every friend group needs that person they can get a hug from whenever one’s needed. Or maybe a house with an open door that feels like a safe place when the world feels out of control. Maybe it’s just an ear that listens and a heart that genuinely cares.

If you could bottle up the warmth of the sun and imbue it into a couple, it would be Jess and Jaison. And for all these reasons and more, consider myself jealous that you have an ally like this in your life. It’s rare.

As someone on the outside who had a just a single day to drop in and spend time with you, thank you for letting be one of the pack, I felt like an old friend from the very first minute. From the deep talks to the lolz, each of you are some of the best humanity has and the light you all reflect toward each other isn’t something often seen.

Some people find their people. Jess and Jaison found theirs twice over, once in each other, and once in all of you.

Eloped at Glen Oaks in Big Sur, said their vows under a canopy of redwoods older than most countries, then hopped in the car and chased Highway 1 north hoping the sky would cooperate and the sun would hangout just a little bit longer.

It almost didn’t. Watched the light fade the whole drive down. Then right as we pulled over, the clouds broke and the pretty light lingered.

(btw you kept it real with converse under the dress the whole day, because comfort > blisters, always.)
