After hearing the tragic news of Nex Benedict’s death, I created this artwork. All trans children deserve the right to live happy lives, and to grow up to be happy trans adults. I have received a lot of requests to turn this into a sticker, so I am selling this and donating 100% of the profits to @translifeline.

(From their website: “Trans Lifeline connects trans people to the community support and resources we need to survive and thrive.”)

There is so much to say about Dolly. She clearly was the patron saint of humanity. I particularly have been thinking about Dolly and her love of literacy.

My kids had access to the Imagination Library when they were little. Things were tight, and we didn’t have a lot of money. We did visit the library regularly, but only had a few books that we could claim as our own.

We signed up for the program when they were babies. Both my kids got one book a month until they were 5. (I believe that is how Imagination Library still runs today.) Because of the books we had in our house, my kids became hyperlexic, reading before they turned 3. They are still avid readers today.

Nowadays we have a bookshelf in every room of our home. Our love of books and literacy is a core part of our family values.

During the pandemic we set up a lending library across from a school in a neighborhood where many kids don’t own their own books. Kids don’t have access to the Imagination Library where I live, so I like to think, in a very small way, we are continuing Dolly’s tradition.

Anyway, what a beautiful soul she was. by @hellomeridth

The world is constantly on fire and I’m on deadline (or trying to keep up with my deadline). The book I’m working on is about trans history, which feels like a monumental task considering the US is doing its best to ban books in schools and libraries with “sexually oriented materials,” a wording that implies that all books with queer and/or trans people in them would be banned. (Please call your reps demanding they oppose HR 7661 and support the “Right to Read” act introduced this past December.)

When I started researching for my anthology, there were no kidlit anthologies on trans history. None. Thankfully there are some more now. But we need to fight to so that publishers continue to produce them, so bookstores proudly display them, and schools and libraries buy them, so all kids have access to them. (Windows, doors, and mirrors, my friends.)

All that to say, call your reps! Buy books featuring LGBTQ+ characters! And to my fellow kidlit creators making LGBTQ+ kids books, keep on keeping on. What we do is important. by @hellomeridth

Hello lovelies! I’m currently on a deadline, so this post is a double dip.

First off, Happy Trans Rights Readathon! For those unfamiliar with this annual festivity, the goal is to uplift/read/support trans, non-binary, 2Spirit, and gender expansive characters and author/illustrators as well as raise funds for trans causes.

I’ve been thinking about how I see more YA and adult books recommended for TRR and we cannot forget to include kidlit, particularly picture books. Especially since we are currently facing a national book ban targeting trans books. I mean check out this incredibly vague and bigoted statement in the HR 7661 Bill that it would ban any book that “involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism.”

This would mean that any book featuring trans people would be banned in public schools all across the United States. It makes me sad to think that kids would miss out on so many amazing books that would either validate their own lived experience, or it could be a book that makes the world a more tolerant place.

Anyway, there’s a lot going on right now. Give yourself a squeeze, hang in there! And I made you a handy dandy list of quick things you could do to celebrate, uplift, and fight back. I hope you can find the time to do some or all of the suggestions below. (Cookies for those that do!)

To support the Trans Rights Readathon:
🩵 Read trans books and books by trans authors & illustrators
🩷Uplift trans authors & illustrators
🤍Retweet, repost, highlight and/or positively review trans books and trans authors & illustrators
🩵Go to @transrightsreadathon for more details, recommendations, and/or to donate.

Speak out against the National Book Banning Bill HR 7661
🩷Urge your representative to vote no on HR 7661 and to protect students’ and parents’ constitutional rights and their freedom to read
🤍5calls.org/issue/federal-book-ban-hr7661/ for their script, or see @authorsagainstbookbans or the @americanlibraryassociation statement opposing this bill
