🖤 SO… WHAT EXACTLY IS NEEDFUL THINGS?

Well, it started the way most collections probably do…

With one thing too many.

An interesting box at an auction.

A brass lamp at a car boot sale that was simply too good to leave behind.

A set of drawers with the wrong price on them.

And then another thing. And another.

Before long, Nicola and Steve were spending most of their weekends at auctions, antique fairs, markets, clearances and various places they probably shouldn’t have been poking around in… looking for things with character, history and a bit of life left in them.

And somewhere along the way, Needful Things happened.

Today, the collection is a curious mixture of antiques, vintage pieces, oddities, natural history and taxidermy — alongside the things Nicola and Steve create themselves.

Because sometimes the most interesting things aren’t the things you find.

They’re the things you see the possibility in.

A damaged chandelier.

An old wooden box.

A forgotten set of drawers.

A pile of brass fittings.

Objects that other people might have overlooked become the starting point for something completely new.

Nicola has a particular knack for looking at something and thinking “I could do something with that…” — while Steve is the one who makes sure those ideas actually become solid, working, rather fabulous objects rather than remaining theories involving broken lamps and old clock parts.

And we don’t believe everything old needs to look new.

Scratches, worn edges, old repairs, patina and imperfections are part of the story.

So we clean, repair, restore and make things safe where they need it…

But we try not to erase the years that came before us.

Because what’s the point of owning something with a story if you remove all the evidence?

Found. Considered. Restored. Reimagined. Rehomed.

That’s Needful Things.

A collection that never quite stays the same.

And a never-ending hunt for the next curious thing.

🖤 Come and see what we’ve found.

🖤 THE HOUR THIEVES

Time waits for no one… or so they say.

Yet beneath the glass, two little white mice have found themselves a moment to linger amongst the brass, brambles and fading flowers. One climbs towards the clock face, the other pauses below — seemingly unaware of the hours slipping quietly away.

A curious little world where woodland charm meets a darker kind of fairy tale. A forgotten clock, given a second life and transformed into something altogether more peculiar.

An individual taxidermy assemblage, imagined and created by Nicola for Needful Things.

Because some things are far too curious to be left behind.

What do you suppose these little hour thieves are plotting?

Sold complete with glass cloche.

🖤 THEY CAME. THEY CAUGHT SOMEONE’S EYE. AND THEN THEY DISAPPEARED…

A few of the curious pieces that have recently left the Needful Things collection and found new homes.

The Pricket Candlesticks.
The Gentle Giant.
Hickory Dickory Dock - Versions 1 & 2.
Woodland Companions.
The Guardians.

Some were old, some were worn, some were given a second life… and each had a story of its own.

Now their stories continue somewhere else. 🖤

But don’t worry…

There are always more strange, wonderful and wonderfully peculiar things waiting in the shadows.

What will disappear next?

🖤 There’s something rather magical about watching the garden change with the seasons.

The trees around the pond are beginning to turn, slowly shifting from summer greens into the rich copper, gold and russet shades of autumn. As the leaves move gently in the breeze and the water sits quietly beneath them, the garden becomes a little world of its own.

And it’s here that the inspiration for something new has begun…

Rather than looking any further than home, the changing garden itself is providing the materials. Leaves are carefully handpicked, then patiently dried using a fan — a process that takes around a week before they’re ready to be transformed.

The very first of these homegrown materials has now found its way into our first Green Man box.

A little piece of the garden, gathered by hand, preserved through the changing season, and given a new life.

From garden… to Green Man.

🖤 THE WATCHER

Some pieces catch your eye.

Some pieces make you stop.

And some pieces… watch you back.

Meet The Watcher — a striking carved wooden figure with elongated limbs, oversized feet and a deeply expressive face, finished with long, tousled hair and a woven, fringed covering.

Dark, weathered and wonderfully peculiar, there’s something about him that’s difficult to ignore. His angular stance and wonderfully aged appearance give him an unmistakably unsettling presence — the sort of piece that could sit quietly in the corner of a room and somehow become the first thing everyone notices.

Perfect for an eclectic interior, an unusual collection or a cabinet of curiosities… if you’re brave enough.

He is offered in his existing condition, with visible splits, surface wear and losses to the finish, all of which add to his wonderfully weathered character.

Age and geographical origin are unconfirmed.

But the real question is… would you bring The Watcher home?

🖤 A LITTLE SOMETHING IS HAPPENING…

We had a lovely visit today to this wonderful place — somewhere filled with curious things, beautiful finds and plenty of inspiration.

And behind the scenes, we’ve been working on something rather exciting for Needful Things.

We’re not quite ready to tell you what it is just yet…

But we’re very excited about what’s to come.

For now, we’ll leave you with a little glimpse from today.

Watch this space. 🖤

🖤 THE WEATHERED WATCHER

Some things don’t simply measure the weather.
They’ve been watching it for generations.

This striking carved wooden barometer is the sort of object that makes you stop and look twice.

Twisting branches frame the dial, with intricately carved ivy leaves winding their way around the case. The rich, warm wood, deep carving and wonderfully sculptural form make it feel almost as though the whole thing has grown from the forest floor.

At its centre sits the original barometer dial, marked with STORM, RAIN, CHANGE, FAIR and VERY DRY — a wonderfully old-fashioned reminder of a time when the weather was something you watched closely rather than simply checking on your phone.

The dial is signed Cutts Sutton & Son, Sheffield & London, adding another little piece to its story.

There’s something rather lovely about imagining all the skies this old instrument has witnessed.

Rain against windows.
Storm clouds gathering.
Long afternoons of sunshine.
And all those moments when someone glanced at the dial to see what the day might bring.

Now, rather than predicting the weather, it can simply sit there and tell its own story.

A wonderfully characterful piece for a study, hallway or somewhere that needs a little more curiosity.

And yes — this one is for sale. 🖤

🖤 THE NURSERY HORSE

Some old things ask to be restored.

Others ask to be left exactly as they were found.

This wonderful old nursery horse was discovered quite by chance during a visit to a Flea Market — and somehow, he found his way home to Needful Things.

Dating from the Victorian era, he remarkably retains all of his original parts, with worn paint, knocks, scratches and a beautifully aged patina telling the story of years gone by.

We’ve deliberately left him just as he is.

No repainting. No attempt to make him look new. His wear is part of his history — from a time when toys were made to last and passed from one childhood to another.

Many years later, he has found a new chapter at Needful Things.

Now looking for his next home. 🖤

If you’d like to give this wonderfully characterful piece another chapter, please email:

🖤 500 OF YOU

Well, this is rather wonderful…

Somewhere between the strange, the beautiful, the curious and the downright peculiar…

…we reached 500 followers.

When we started sharing the things that catch our eye — the old, the unusual, the forgotten and the things with a story still waiting to be told — we never quite knew who would be interested enough to come along for the journey.

Turns out… over 500 of you were. 🖤

Every like, comment, share, follow and message means more to our little corner of the internet than you probably realise.

Thank you for coming along while we uncover old treasures, give forgotten pieces a new chapter and occasionally wonder what on earth someone was thinking when they made it…

From the bottom of our slightly dusty, antique-filled hearts…

Thank you for 500.

Here’s to the next curious discovery.
And whatever strange little treasure finds its way through the door next.

Needful Things — where the unusual is always welcome.
