I thought getting a dog would mean having someone to go on adventures with. I didn’t realise how much I’d fall in love with the everyday stuff.

The sound of her paws following me into another room. Her sleepy face when she first wakes up. The way she checks back on a walk to make sure I’m still there. Sitting together doing absolutely nothing, then looking down at her and wishing I could keep that moment forever.

Kiwi has given me so many reasons to enjoy the life happening right in front of me. Even on the uneventful days. Even when I’m tired, my hair’s a mess and I’m wearing the same hoodie for the third day in a row.

She’s still happy to see me. Still scoots closer. Still wants me to come outside with her.

There’s something so lovely about being loved in your most ordinary moments. No occasion, no achievement, nothing particularly exciting to report. Just me and my dog, having another day together.

And somehow, those are the days I want more of. 🤎 by @hellookiwi_

Some places become part of your story forever. For me, that place is oneROOF Youth Services. 🤎

Here in Kitchener, oneROOF supports youth ages 12–25 who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Years ago, I was one of those youth.

They helped me find paths forward, even when I wasn’t ready to take them. Day after day, crisis after crisis, they kept showing up. They never gave up on me.

These walls, and the people inside them, have seen so many chapters of my life. The young girl facing homelessness. The girl struggling with addiction. The girl who became pregnant while still trying to find her own footing.

They saw me through moments when I couldn’t see a future for myself.

And years later, I walk through those same doors as the Supervisor of Housing in oneROOF’s Supportive Transitional Housing building. As well as the Manager and creator of the internal RISE program.

Sometimes, I still struggle to find the words for what that means to me. To give back to the place that once gave me so much. To support youth while remembering what it felt like to be on the other side of that support.

I’m thankful for every person who kept the door open, offered another chance and believed there was more ahead for me.

Now, I get to help carry that belief forward.

I couldn’t be more thankful. 🤎

Something about the pretty colours, the trees losing their leaves, and the chilly mornings reminds me that change is part of growth. 🍂🤎

I look at the trees this time of year and think about how much we ask of ourselves - to keep going, keep growing, keep holding everything together. Meanwhile, nature is slowing down. Letting things fall. Making room for a season of rest.

I’m trying to give myself a little of that same grace.

Some changes are exciting. Others hurt, or leave us bare and vulnerable; even when we know we need it. Sometimes we miss an old version of our lives while still feeling grateful for the one we’re building. I’m learning that both feelings can exist together.

This season makes me want to slow down enough to notice what’s around me. The leaves beneath my feet, the cool air on my face and the little moments with Kiwi that I’ll wish I could come back to someday.

I don’t have everything figured out but there’s comfort in watching the world change around me. It reminds me that I’m allowed to change too. To let go of things I’ve outgrown, take my time and trust that there’s still something beautiful ahead.

For now, I’m grateful for these chilly mornings, this dog beside me, the family I love and another season of becoming. 🐾🍁
