How do you give a new home the soul of one that has stood for generations?

For this Kiawah Island residence, @jeffreydungan looked to Arts & Crafts traditions and the surrounding Lowcountry landscape, layering weathered plaster, aged timber and finely crafted architectural details to create a home that feels deeply rooted in place.

Shaped by mass, curve, and material continuity, the Voussoir collection from @kallistadesign elevates the sink to an architectural statement. Each sink is made from a single block of stone with front-face carved detail.

“The prolific American architect Tom Kligerman invited Art & Antiques to visit the Rhode Island house that he designed for his family. What we saw and occupied during the visit was a work of domestic architectural art. Kligerman shares with us his description of how and why he created this unique home. He calls the house Nushka Hoo, a reference to both the Native Americans who originally occupied the land there and an old term that indicates the elevated site on which the house sits, with the scents and sounds of the ocean nearby. “Architects and winemakers have one thing in common: They both see possibility where others see only raw material. So, when Grant Kirkpatrick, founding partner and principal of KAA Design Group, and his wife, Shaya, longed for a lake house where they could give their children the splashy summers they themselves had grown up with, they found it on a 30-acre former cattle ranch along Lake Nacimiento in Paso Robles, Calif., dubbed Split Rock Ranch. They converted the land into a vineyard and fell so in love with the property that they soon felt their storage barn was ripe for reinvention. The couple set about transforming it into a stunning retreat, and the result retains the straightforward spirit of the original structure, while details are designed for compatibility with the landscape.” – Kathryn O’Shea-Evans, The Robb Report

@butlerarmsden _architects Redwood Grove House project now out in @shltr_mag.

“The redesign for Serra and Mauricio’s house is a love letter not only to the redwoods, but to their families—especially Lewis. Each time the design team had a question during the remodel, Serra asked, what would Lewis do? “It was this beautiful ritual that helped us process his passing,” Ballon says. “We each had our history with him. He’s part of this house.”

@wsj recognizes @kligerman.ad’s brilliantly innovative work modernizing shingles.

“Many early Colonial homes were clad in wooden shingles, said architect Thomas A. Kligerman in a July lecture at Newport Design Week. He speaks to the 1870s and 1880s, when a new style emerged pairing shingles and minimal ornamental trims with porches, large windows, towers and asymmetrical roofs. The term Shingle-style was coined by historian Vincent Scully in the 1950s, bringing renewed attention to the style. To modernize these homes, some designers are paring back moldings and columns, said Kligerman. Several firms, including Kligerman’s, have begun ‘shrink-wrapping’ houses in continuous shingles to create a monolithic look.” – Sarah Paytner, Wall Street Journal.
