✨18 years✨ 
Last month my calligraphy journey turned 18 years old. When I started this practice, I was just out of college, my fresh poli sci degree had been met with a fresh recession. I wished for nothing more in those moments, than my father’s wisdom, my father who passed away a week after my 18th birthday. In my introduction to adulthood, I craved his direction and comfort. So I started calligraphy as a meditative therapy to recall the many bits of wisdom he had imparted to me. Soon, friends entrusted their wedding announcements to me, and what started out as a hobby at the kitchen table of a house I shared with 6 other girls, became a love affair with letters and somehow a full blown career. This year, my roster of regular clients include names I couldn’t have dreamt of collaborating with when I started this journey fresh out of college.

When I started out in 2008 I called my business Dear Darling Calligraphy, as a reminder of my papa who always called me his darling. It only feels fitting that in my 18th year I felt led to rebrand to Suzy Lee Calligraphy, stepping into my own as a a professional navigating a growing business in NYC. For everyone that has followed this wildly vulnerable and deeply personal creative journey of mine, both recently and through many different life seasons, deepest gratitude❣️

In my own journey, true art is not being so committed to the picture in your head that you abandon the journey of process. It’s letting possibility take center stage, and that possibility has taken on new shapes in this city. Part ☝️ in a ✌️part series, entitled NEW YORK CALLIGRAPHER VS SEPTEMBER! September was the busiest I have ever been in my actual entire life. It involved driving through torrential rain on the Jackie Robinson Highway to make it back from the RHONY premiere with a flattening tire, a Secret Service sweep, a 48’ seating chart mural done in 6.5 hours, a lot of engraving dust and a gajillion bottles of ink rolling around every bag I own. But she showed up and got the job done. Insanely thankful for so many amazing clients who find me all kinds of canvasses and allow me to do what I love and fellow calligraphers who bring me onto projects or refer clients my way. 💛The joy bomb that is the @pioneerworks gala. Almost 400 auction paddle place cards for this highlight in my calendar. The beauty in calligraphy is that even in a lot that big, each name has a moment of preciousness in my hands. 🪄 There is some beautiful sacred truth in there. 🤲🏽
