Ten years ago, I definitely didn’t picture my mornings involving a flock of chickens waiting on me like I’m late for my shift.

Now it’s just part of the routine.

Feed them. Check on everybody. Get yelled at by poultry. Carry on.

Weird how quickly the life you never planned for starts feeling completely normal.

Jacksonville, consider this your warning: there’s a new antique shop side quest happening over here.

Vintage finds, weird little treasures, old pieces with actual personality, and probably at least one thing you absolutely do not need but will convince yourself is coming home with you.

If you’re local to Jacksonville and love thrifting, antiques, and finding the good stuff before everyone else does, hit that follow button and stick around. The grand opening is coming soon!

Honestly, we’ve come a long way. From suspicion and hostility to a varying amount of tolerance, depending on who you ask of course. For someone who has housing, food, healthcare and state of the art security (if you consider chicken wire and closed doors security) you’d think they’d be begging ME to trust them.

So I found my biological sister, Amber. We looked alike, lived in the same state, and had actual DNA evidence that we were related. We proceeded to do absolutely nothing about it for a while. #helluvahomestead #familysecret #backyardchickens #adoptionislove #adoptionstory taken in North Jacksonville, Jacksonville by @helluva_homestead

Day 5 of convincing my roosters that I’m not here to murder them.

Today we’re visiting Shaq, my Indio Gigante rooster. If you’ve never heard of an Indio Gigante, they’re a Brazilian breed known for their ridiculous height, long legs, and ability to make an ordinary chicken look like it’s been assembled incorrectly. Some roosters can stand over 3 feet tall.

Shaq and his girlfriend Sheila came to us after they outgrew their previous family’s yard, and their owners had a little too much on their plate. They’re a nervous couple, which we discovered pretty much immediately when we brought them home and Shaq escaped into my bushes.

Now, normally I’d let a chicken take a little time to figure out its surroundings, but it was his first night in a completely unfamiliar place, and I wasn’t particularly interested in finding out whether he could survive the local wildlife while disoriented, overheated, and potentially dehydrated.

So naturally, we had to tackle this enormous, terrified chicken with a net and escort him to his accommodations.

An excellent introduction to his new family, I’m sure.

Shaq is still my most flighty rooster, and for now he lives in his own enclosure with Sheila, who seems equally suspicious of our entire operation. We’re working on building some trust, although I suspect Shaq still remembers the bush incident and has filed a formal complaint.

Turns out a 30 year family secret needs a lot more explanation than I first anticipated.
I dyed my hair last night then realized you guys neeeded some key details in the saga, so you’re gonna see me with this hair, then me with my old hair haha
Anyway, back to the content you didn’t know you didn’t need but now have found yourself inexplicably watching while taking a shit. Anyway follow for part 4 or 5 or whatever number we’re on!

Day 4: Indigo won’t take food from my hand but will accept a back massage. Metal Chicken is entertaining a lady friend in broad daylight. I think we’re making progress.

Look at that interest💚

Our Organic Molt & Layer Protein Booster™️

During the annual fall molt, a chicken’s body undergoes intense physical stress as it sheds old, worn feathers and regrows an entirely new coat. Protein and oregano play vital, complementary roles in helping birds navigate this demanding phase smoothly.
