New in TUSSLE: Saul Ostrow on Lindsay Walt’s The Measure of Things.

Ostrow situates Walt within one of painting’s lasting questions: how a picture’s parts can hold together without being forced into a single unified whole. Her geometric abstractions look familiar, yet their balance stays imperfect and their structures never quite settle. She neither revives modernism’s old ideals nor rejects them, but treats them as materials to work with rather than rules to follow. Rather than pursuing a signature style, each painting takes up these questions anew.

Her paintings, Saul writes, are “not refinements of a solution but returns to a problem from another position.”

In The Measure of Things, Lindsay Walt sets soft, glowing fields of color against clusters of sharp, taut lines. Applying fluid washes of saturated color to the surface much like ceramic glaze, she builds an atmosphere that the lines then gather into chambers, spaces of containment within an otherwise boundless field. Writing on the exhibition, Simon places the work closer to the infinite space and transcendentalism of Hilma af Klint than to the austerity of Minimalism.

This past Saturday, Lindsay Walt and Suzanne Unrein joined us at Helm Contemporary for an afternoon in conversation within THE MEASURE OF THINGS.

THE MEASURE OF THINGS is now on view at Helm Contemporary.

Join us this Saturday, September 19th for an afternoon in conversation with Lindsay Walt and artist Suzanne Unrein. Artist present 3–5pm, talk begins at 3:30. Seating first come first served.

Suzanne Unrein was born in Sacramento, CA and lives and works in New York. Her paintings — marked by gestural mark-making and vivid, unnatural color — probe a hybridized existence where animals, figures, and botanical forms are swept up in an urgent desire to flourish, drawing on both robotic flora and the emotive blooms of the Dutch Golden Age. Her work has been exhibited at Rare Gallery, Heather James Fine Arts, Mitte Projects, the Torrance Art Museum, and Pen + Brush, among others, and is held in the collections of the U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and the Eileen S. Kaminsky Family Foundation. She is a 2025 residency recipient of the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts.

The Space Between, featuring artwork by Emilia Levin, Eliott Leeds, and Hannah Levy. On view at Helm Contemporary through August 08th.

Meet Eliott Leeds is a New York based artist completing his BFA in illustration. By expressing emotion through bold and opaque colors, he eliminates the presence of visible brushstrokes to create flat, liminal spaces that invite viewers to immerse themselves into his reconstructed and speculative memories.

The artists will be in the gallery today and tomorrow.

Meet Emilia Levin, curatorial intern at Helm Contemporary and one of the three artists behind our current exhibition. Emilia is completing her BFA at Parsons School of Design, with a minor in Museum and Curatorial Studies. Working primarily in oil paint, her practice is currently occupied with memory and childhood nostalgia — reconstructing scenes of family life into dreamlike, layered compositions.
She’s one of three artists featured in The Space Between, now on view at Helm Contemporary ✨

Alongside fellow rising Parsons seniors Eliott Leeds and Hannah Levy, the show considers identity as something continuously shaped — through familiar spaces, fragmented recollections, and imagined landscapes. Personal histories, revisited and reinvented.

Devi Vallabhaneni and MorphoAI. Some pairings make immediate sense.

Ayna Arora’s generative design platform recently opened in SoHo, steps from the galleries and studios that have defined this neighborhood for decades.

The parallel is hard to ignore. MorphoAI feeds constraints into an algorithm and the form emerges. Devi’s Tala Series works the same way — the Tala, an ancient Indian unit of measurement from the Shilpa Shastra, is a pre-modern algorithm, encoding divine proportion into repeatable form. She resolves those sequences by hand into embroidered bas relief. Different centuries. Same logic.

That this work now lives inside a company dedicated to generative design, in the heart of SoHo, feels exactly right.

Extended through July 15, THE COLOR OF GRAVITY.

Li Trincere’s Situation 1 and Russell Maltz’s S.P. / O – Axis Orange stand in quiet dialogue. Trincere paints an angled canvas into four interlocking fields — burgundy, tan, mauve, and gold — converging upon a single sharp point, geometry constructed entirely in flat colour. Maltz suspends layered glass from a single steel bracket, translucent orange bleeding across a drafting grid beneath, weight and motion implied without a single moving part. One work is anchored by paint. The other, by gravity alone.

“Great Abstract and Abstract-Adjacent Exhibitions Around New York” - Published on Whitehot Magazine (June 12, 2026)
