Can you see me?
Hint: I’m the only one smiling.

In this picture I was in first grade. The same age as my daughter now.
This was taken in Iran where I spent the majority of my early years.

The emotions I feel when I look at this picture are very deep. I have often felt this part of my life didn’t actually happen and then to have proof feels oddly validating. It did happen and at the time I remember I was excited. Excited to wear the hijab, to go to school, to learn to read and write. I was exceptional at penmanship, I wish I kept those journals. But my excitement quickly turned into anxiety and nausea as the days passed.

The interesting part was I didn’t feel I belonged there. And when we came here I felt I didn’t belong either. Always trying to find my place. There’s a piece of me that will somehow belong somewhere in the middle.

I have so much gratitude for the hardship my family experienced to get me out. Gratitude for the experiences that have shaped me into who I am. And now even more for the life I get to give my kids.

I can’t explain “freedom” with words because it still won’t be as powerful as how it feels to be free. ❤️ by @helyaglen

What does it mean to be Weird More?

For us it means questioning the norm and getting closer to our natural selves. To slow down and reconnect with the people and the world around us. That’s why we joined @latrailkillers, the South LA outdoor crew for a beautiful day on the trail with their community.

Reject Normal. Weird More.

Every step starts at your feet. Strong feet absorb load, keep you balanced, and take stress off your ankles, knees, and hips. Train them like you train everything else. Thanks @vivobarefoot, @helyaglen, @thefootcollective, and @laurenexploren for capturing it all. How often do you train your feet? by @helyaglen

What does weird more mean to you?
How can we build a relationship with nature?
Why don’t we stop and take notice more often?
What happens when we slow down?

Here’s a recap of our recent community collab hike, where friends answered some simple yet deep questions while enjoying a lovely day in the sun/shade.

Turns out foot strength is a lot more fun when everyone’s wobbling together. Toe splays, balance work, running warm up drills, and a lot of laughter at Built From the Ground Up with @vivobarefoot @helyaglen @thefootcollective shot by @laurenexploren. by @helyaglen

Built From the Ground Up is an event I’ll be thinking about for a while! Thank you @vivobarefoot, @thefootcollective, and @helyaglen for teaching our community about their feet and how to be a resilient runner. Another huge thanks to @laurenexploren for capturing it all, @pinyonfam for the hot coffee & pastries (gone so fast), and @drinklaurels for the delicious canned coffee and matcha that everyone loved. Most of all, thank you to the community for showing up and having fun! Please tag yourself if you were there, more pictures to come! by @helyaglen

Been busy building building building!

Normal ≠ Always Better.

Let your feet feel.

Primus Trail Knit—Grounding.

Weird More. Free your feet. Vivo Barefoot.

#WeirdMore #Freeyourfeet #VivoBarefoot by @helyaglen

Your feet are the foundation of every run, and most runners never train them.

We’re teaming up with @vivobarefoot for a free outdoor workshop built to change that. Come test your foot and ankle strength, learn practical exercises you can actually use, and understand how stronger feet translate into a stronger, more capable run. We’ll bust some of the biggest myths around feet, footwear, and injury along the way, and you’ll get to try Vivobarefoot shoes and feel what barefoot training is really like.

No experience needed, just bring yourself and a willingness to move and play.

Saturday, September 12 from 9:30 to 11:30am at Father Serra Cross in Ventura.

Spots are limited, so if you’d like to join us, DM me and I’ll send over the link to reserve yours.

What’s one thing about your feet or running you’ve always wondered about? Drop it below and we’ll cover it at the workshop. by @helyaglen
