Hey pals! This post is a bit of a bummer, but also it’s real life and not a perfectly curated feed.

I’m taking a step back from performing for a bit, and the next month off teaching. I’ve been struggling with burnout for a while, and my vocal load has been outrageous as I keep trying to burn the candle from every possible angle. I took this photo at the peak of a few months of rejections, almosts, and pushing through illness. She’s tired.

Last week I saw my ENT for what I thought was a fairly routine voice scope regarding some fatigue, and instead it turned out to be a vocal fold haemorrhage and a haemorrhagic polyp. The initial bleed has happened somewhere in the last few months without me noticing, and the polyp formed because I was still teaching and performing for 30+ hours a week on the bleed. The fact that my voice was still working, let alone functional enough to perform, is pretty impressive (not to glorify overachieving but yay me).

I’ll be having voice surgery next Thurs, then taking 10 days of complete silence, and a gradual return to voice over the next month or so. I want to be upfront about this, as it still feels like there is some shady stigma surrounding vocal health and injuries. For me, this was a case of bad luck exacerbated by a very heavy workload, and yet I still found myself questioning my abilities as a vocalist and teacher. That’s silly.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pretty bummed though. It’s costing me thousands in lost work, medical intervention and rehabilitation. I had to drop out of a show and a role I was really looking forward to, and it’s coincided with Steve being away on tour. But, there’s always a silver lining, and I’m so grateful that it’s as small as it is, in the bigger picture. My mind and body have been asking for a break for a while, and I was ignoring it. I get a chance to reset, heal, and to reconnect with myself and my self worth away from the arts. I love what I do, but right now I need to love myself more.

Anyways, here’s to my silent retreat era. Plz send binge worthy recommendations and enjoy your Easter chocolate for me because I’m not allowed it for a while.

Thank you so much for the birthday messages! It was a huge weekend of shows and life, so it’s taken me days to get back to you all, but I truly felt the love. I spent my birthday in pretty gowns, singing carols, and surrounded by joy.

Anyway, here’s a pic of me in one of those pretty gowns, so I can look back at my feed when I’m 87 and remember how much I loved turning 37. 🥰 by @henchalada
