super vulnerable fitness post:
2 years ago this week, the Lord started healing a wound I didn’t know existed. Growing up in sports and with a passion for fitness, I cared deeply about my athletic performance. I heard the messages for years about finding my identity in Christ and not my sports. While I was able to detach my identity from my softball stats, I didn’t realize the idol that I made fitness to be. I was finding all of my identity and worth in “being a gym rat” and what my body looked like/could do. I wanted to look like an athlete at all times because I lacked confidence in who Brooke Hendrickson is if not an athlete. I feared the rejection of others so I hid behind my jersey and my gym posts. In these seasons of my life, I struggled with food obsession, chased others’ affection, & feeling the need to “earn my meals” in the name of discipline. What I meant to be dedication & applying advice from the internet led to me closing the door of my own jail cell. BUT PRAISE BE TO GOD, who gives us TRUE FREEDOM!
Two years ago, I attempted my first run. 6ish miles at a 12:00 pace. It was the first time I ever did something out of GRATITUDE for the body I was in. For the first time, I didn’t exercise to win the praise of others or to look “fit and skinny” enough to draw the attention of others.

During the run, the Lord showed me a few big things in those short moments :
1) I can never please everyone
2) I will only feel satisfied when I center my life around obedience to the Father and not performance for the world
3) Selflessness does not mean I take poor care of myself. I serve best when I let God be my provider and father. He’s not some unsympathetic boss.

Two years later, I stand in the confidence of Christ & clothed in truths of what He says about me.
I share this to call out the half lies of self care that I believed for so long, to share a glimpse of my testimony, and hopefully encourage others to call out the enemy’s lies. 13.1 & feeling SO LOVED !!

don’t know what made me want to cry more: the support from my people or the hill at mile 12 :))

the whole race I was surprised by more and more @lcuchaps and @iabc_lubbock family that were cheering me on every mile. thank you Lord for a community of believers that encourage me in every way!! ANDDDD, huge shout out to Dad who drove in from MN to watch my first race !!

running photo dump & some things the Lord has taught me in my recent miles :)) ->

- the art of being steady: steady, consistent, and steadfast. I pray that I am known for these things. In my relationship with Jesus, in my relationships with friends and family, and in my dedication to my athletes.

- you have control over your emotions even when it doesn’t feel like it: the enemy is not all knowing. He doesn’t know your thoughts like God does. All he can do is prompt thoughts but if you have the Holy Spirit in you, you can command those thoughts. We can’t always control what comes into our heads but we CAN choose what we allow to stay.

- being ambitious doesn’t mean it needs to be an idol: I want to be the best at what I do: the best coach, the best teammate, the best leader, etc. I need to allow the Lord to be the only one to fill me. He alone will satisfy. Ambition doesn’t mean something needs to be an idol. But it can become one easily. When we turn to idols as our source of worth, we will always feel shorted. We are CALLED BY GOD to be good stewards of the gifts He has given us. SO BE ONE!! We can also be humble by remembering that everything we have is a gift given to us BY GOD to be stewarded! It was never mine! I simply just want to thank the Father by caring well and bringing passion into the field that He’s called me to!

- There is a real enemy and it’s not who it “feels like”: the enemy is not anyone on this earth. It’s Satan. And he HATES YOU. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭12‬) They’ve done their research and plead a good case but they will never overpower the Lord.

- it’s okay to not know what’s coming up: as a new Lubbock runner, I usually start my runs and go strictly off of vibes and how far Strava says I’ve ran. I don’t have set routes. Sometimes my runs are really planned out and others are full of me turning around at dead ends to run back. There’s a time and place for that and it’s OKAY to only have a general idea of where the Lord is taking you! taken in Lubbock, Texas by @hendrickson.brooke

Lord, you have been so faithful to such a sinner like me. How amazing is the grace that you have lavishly poured out upon us. You left the 99 to find the wretch that is ME. Tis grace that brought me safe this far and grace that will lead me home. Thank you, Jesus.
May this next season be marked by faithful acts of bold faith to bring your children home to the Father who loves them more than anything or anyone on this earth ever could. Lord, let our lives be ones as vessels. May we never lose sight of the joy that comes from being not just creation, but a child of the one true king. Give us strength to share with no fear of man and only with the strength, courage, and words given by the Holy Spirit. Jesus, we love you.
