Matthew Dicks, bestselling author, Tedx speaker, and teacher captivated current students, alumni, and Arkansas area preachers with stories and powerful practices for “How to Tell a Better Story.”

Matthew is a 62-time Moth StorySLAM champion and 10-time GrandSLAM champion.

His visit last week was co-sponsored by the Compelling Preaching Initiative, funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment and administered by the Methodist Foundation for Arkansas along with the Hendrix College Office of Religious Life and the John and Marjem Gill Preaching Workshop. by @hendrixcollege

🌿 Big experiences start with great partnerships.

Hendrix-in-Costa Rica brings together the expertise of Hendrix faculty and our partners in Costa Rica, Human Nature Expeditions, to create an immersive learning experience that extends far beyond the classroom.

Dr. J.D. Gantz (biology) and Dr. Carmen Merrick (psychology) work with Human Nature Expeditions’ co-owner Alexa Stickel to shape a four-week summer program exploring the connections between tropical biology, conservation psychology, and the ways people understand and protect the natural world.

From developing the program’s academic foundation to bringing it to life in Costa Rica, this collaboration creates opportunities for students to learn from the environment, engage with local communities, and see how knowledge can inspire meaningful change.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
During this 4-week Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Summer Language Program, students will experience the natural splendor and exciting culture of Costa Rica. They will be based in San Luis, near the famed cloud forests of Monteverde, from early June to early July 2027.

Students can learn more at the upcoming Hendrix-in-Costa Rica information session on Oct. 20, 4:10-5 p.m. in DW Reynolds 137. The deadline to apply is Nov. 2. by @hendrixcollege

From the Hendrix lab to published scientific research🔬🧡🖤

A paper from the lab of Dr. Andrea Duina, professor of biology, has been published in “microPublication Biology,” with six former Hendrix students among its co-authors!

Their work explored how a specific change in a component of chromosomes causes defects in how a critical cellular factor interacts with genes.

In the process, these students gained hands-on experience asking scientific questions, analyzing results, and sharing discoveries with the scientific community.

For Dr. Duina, the impact goes beyond advancing scientific knowledge. It’s also about helping students discover their passions and build skills that carry forward into their careers.

👏 Congratulations to Dr. Duina and Hendrix alumni Lauren Joseph ’20, Sydney Ozersky ’17, McKenzie Tucker ’22, Grace Turner ’22, Michaela Edwards ’19, and Michelle Huynh ’17.

The Hendrix community will gather on Saturday, October 24, to remember and celebrate the life of Dr. Ralph Scott, a beloved alumnus, professor, mentor, and friend. 🧡🖤

A 1973 graduate of Hendrix, Dr. Scott returned to the College as a faculty member in 1979 and dedicated nearly five decades to teaching and mentoring generations of students. He challenged students to think deeply, ask difficult questions, and engage thoughtfully with the world around them. His influence extends far beyond the classroom and lives on in the many people he taught, encouraged, and inspired.

We invite former students, alumni, colleagues, and friends to join Dr. Scott’s family and the Hendrix community as we share memories, honor his legacy, and celebrate a life that made a lasting difference.

Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day | October 12, 2026

Today, the Hendrix community honors the history, resilience, and rich cultural traditions of Indigenous Peoples and communities.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day invites us to recognize the enduring contributions, knowledge, and leadership of Indigenous communities while acknowledging the histories, experiences, and ongoing challenges that have shaped their past and present.

Honoring Indigenous Peoples means more than recognition. It means listening, learning, respecting, and taking action. May we continue to uplift Indigenous voices, celebrate Indigenous cultures, challenge harmful stereotypes, and honor the sovereignty and self determination of Indigenous Peoples.

At Hendrix College, we believe building a welcoming and inclusive community requires a commitment to learning from one another, honoring our differences, and creating spaces where every person’s history and humanity are valued.

May we move beyond awareness toward meaningful action, today and every day.
