Where do I even begin?

There are only a few moments in a musician’s journey where a single listen can completely change the trajectory of their life. One of those moments for me was hearing Voodoo by D’Angelo — front to back — for the first time. (Thanks @i.r.michael , I’m forever in your debt.)

Admittedly, music like that didn’t exist in my little bubble. I was about nine years late to the game. D’Angelo wasn’t a household name where I grew up, and that album cover didn’t exactly scream “must listen” to teenage me. (Voodoo might just be living proof of the whole “don’t judge a book by its cover” thing.)

To my amazement, my young, naïve ears had no idea bass could sound like that. Songs like “Untitled,” “Send It On,” “The Root,” and “Chicken Grease” opened me up to an entirely new world. The way D’Angelo used complex harmony, syncopation, and feel — all while making it sound so effortless — became the gold standard for what I wanted to chase musically.

After spinning that record over and over (and over), those concepts, tones, and intentions became the tools I leaned on in my own playing and musical growth. Voodoo set the bar — and D’Angelo showed me the kind of musician I wanted to be.

TL;DR: I’m just grateful to exist in the same universe where D’Angelo made music. I wouldn’t be the musician I am today without his records. RIP king.

Your outie loves his pets, your outie doesn’t know any dance moves, your outie likes to eat hot dogs, as long as they are vegetarian friendly

It’s not every gig you get thrown a bass solo, so when it happens, you gotta engage the mu-tron and drop it like it’s hot 🔥🔥

Bach on my BS

Sometimes you have to warmup with something composed over 300 years ago. What’s your warmup routine? Comment below!

“ I Hate The Beatles” is the dumbest thing anyone can ever say. Were you even listening? Paul McCartney is the greatest living parts writer of all time. Disagree? Fight me in the comments, I dare you.

Sorry for going off the rails for a minute…..my morning coffee gave me the Mixolydian runs.

Anyways…Will Lee on Bass (who knew?!) on JB’s 1976 two part single release. The lyrics are about his trouble with The IRS, and JB credits the authorship of the song to his wife and daughters.

Can’t argue with Getting up off that thing, and dancing until you feel better. Sage advice James

Here’s some more advice straight from my coffee mug, “Exercise Hard, Eat Fiber, Die Anyways”

No guitar tech? No problem. Instead of dead air between songs, try ripping some funky grooves during the guitar changeover .

What a blast @andbeyondfestival . Thanks for letting us do our thing 🤘🏻

Okey Dokie Artichokie!

Bass lines don’t get better than this people . This is what we in the biz call an undeniable booty shaker. Featuring Tower Of Power Horns too. Man the 70’s were just something else.

George Porter Jr laying it down as per usual.
