Eric Lewis is 35 years old and has worked for the Philadelphia Water Department since 2024.

On Saturday, October 10, shortly after 12:20 a.m., two officers responded to a report of a man with a gun on the 100 block of North 52nd Street, in the western part of the city. According to police, they found him armed on a porch. Shane Seiber, 40, an Air Force veteran with a decade on the force, died in the attack. His partner, a 33-year-old father of five, was shot 12 times; he was in critical condition and later stabilized.

District Attorney Larry Krasner maintains that Lewis also shot at nine other officers who arrived as backup, bringing the total number attacked to 11. According to the Inquirer, he took refuge in an alley behind his home and was arrested after a standoff lasting nearly an hour. This Sunday, he was arraigned on 76 charges, including murder and the homicide of an officer, and ordered held without bail. According to the arrest report, he allegedly said: "I did what I did because they did what they did." He has been charged, but has not yet been convicted. by @henro_ch7

A Canadian immigration lawyer, Aidan Simardone, says Africa’s poverty cannot be explained by corruption alone, arguing that Western interference and the targeting of honest African leaders are also part of the conversation.

In a statement shared, Simardone challenged the popular narrative that corruption is the main reason African countries struggle economically.

His argument raises questions about the role foreign powers have played in Africa’s political history, including their involvement in leadership changes and their relationships with African governments.

While corruption remains a serious challenge in several African countries, the continent’s economic struggles are also shaped by historical exploitation, resource extraction, debt, political instability and global economic inequalities.

Simardone’s claim that the West assassinates leaders who refuse to be corrupt is a serious allegation. by @henro_ch7

“We bled Africa for four and a half centuries... After enriching ourselves at Africa’s expense, Africa is given lessons,” said former French President Jacques Chirac at the 2001 France-Africa summit in Cameroon.

But while this confession remains an accurate summary of French exploitation of Africa, the man behind the words was far from a liberator.

Indeed, Chirac’s presidency was a masterclass in Francafrique, the shadowy web of French neo-colonial influence, which - to the detriment of African sovereignty - he actively maintained.

For example, Chirac remained a staunch defender of the CFA Franc, a colonial-era currency that required African nations to deposit 50% of their foreign reserves into the French Treasury, effectively stunting independent economic growth.

Under Chirac, France also conducted numerous military interventions to prop up friendly regimes, ensuring that French business interests remained unchallenged across the continent.

Fast forward to the 2026 France-Africa Summit, and Chirac’s warning about “giving lessons” remains relevant.

Current President Emmanuel Macron’s actions, which included patronisingly interrupting moderators to lecture the Nairobi audience on “respect”, echo the very elitism Chirac described.

While Macron uses the language of “partnership,” his conduct suggested that France is still very much in the business of “giving lessons”.

After scolding African youth in a manner that was considered to be deeply condescending, commentators like Zimbabwe’s Fadzayi Mahere had to remind Macron that Africans “are not your kids”.

But as Chirac admitted 25 years ago, you cannot loot a continent’s future and then criticise the state of its present. by @henro_ch7
