To mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Shape of Light team went into secondary schools, not to stand in front of these girls and explain periods like a textbook, but to tell our own stories.

So that’s where we started; with the fear we felt, the mystery, the secrecy we were all raised in.

And it was something to watch. As we talked, we got to undo some of the things these girls had been told; the myths, the shame, the half-truths handed to them as fact. We listened to their questions. We held their hands through it.

That was the whole campaign. Women telling girls: I went through this too. You’re not alone. Here’s what I wish someone had told me.

Today I had the privilege of speaking at a webinar hosted by the Global South Coalition for Dignified Menstruation in celebration of International Women’s Day. The conversation focused on “Dignified Menstruation: Political Engagement from Kitchen to Parliament.”

One thing that stood out during the discussion is how often menstruation is treated as a private or cultural issue, when in reality it is deeply connected to systems of power, access, and opportunity. Menstrual stigma continues to affect girls’ education, women’s participation in the workplace, and even representation in leadership and policy spaces.

Dignified menstruation is about more than access to products. It is about dignity, rights, education, and creating systems that ensure no girl or woman is excluded because of a natural biological process.

I’m grateful to have shared the space with Dr. Neha Damani and to everyone who joined the conversation. Discussions like this remind us that breaking silence and challenging stigma is an important step toward equality.
