A chicken wrangler. A horticulture lead. An intern coordinator. And a whole lot of dirt.

Meet the team at Unity Gardens, a community garden in South Bend, Indiana where all produce is free to pick.

Amazon employees volunteer here regularly, working alongside this crew to grow fresh food for their neighbors.

No playbook. No existing model to fine-tune. Just a blank page and a hard problem.

That's exactly where Sahika thrives.

As a Principal Applied Scientist on the Kiro Science team, she's building subject-matter expert foundational models from scratch. Leadership didn't hand her the answers, they helped her find the right questions.

This is what Applied Science at AWS looks like: cutting-edge tools, world-class collaborators, and problems big enough to matter.

This team started in a garage. Now they design the chips powering billions of requests a day.

Two engineers met in university, built 50+ chips together, and started Annapurna Labs because they believed the industry was under-investing in data center infrastructure while everyone else chased mobile. Today their team designs custom silicon from scratch, from chip to server to data center.

"It's so exciting to be in this fast-moving environment, innovating on behalf of customers and working closely with them to make sure we're building the right things." Gadi, Director of Product & Customer Engineering.

"Every day I come into the office, I get to solve a new problem. Maybe today we're working on hardware, physical boards. Tomorrow we're looking at how we scale the software." Laura, Software Engineering Manager.

"We also value individuals who enjoy working in a dynamic environment where the solution isn’t always the same hammer after the same nail. Given our principles-first approach, many of our challenges get solved at the chip level, the terminal level, and the system level, so we seek individuals who have systems understanding, and are skilled at working across disciplines," Nafea, Vice President and Distinguished Engineer. by @hereataws

The chips powering the biggest names in AI? Built at Amazon. ⚡

Anthropic runs Claude on 1M+ Trainium2 chips. OpenAI committed 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity. Meta committed tens of millions of Graviton cores to agentic AI. 98% of our top 1,000 EC2 customers run on Graviton.

💡 It started with a bet a decade ago — design chips for cloud workloads instead of relying on general-purpose hardware. Today, that bet is paying off with triple-digit YoY growth.

🔧 The engineers behind this work at the intersection of hardware and software — designing silicon from the ground up, then building systems at unprecedented scale.

🧠 Trainium3 UltraServers pack 144 chips into a single system. Trainium4 is already in development.

"One of the ways that we can give ourselves an advantage is by using our deep investments in chips to deliver both performance and cost efficiency that will allow us to differentiate our model development." — Peter DeSantis, SVP, Amazon AI Models, Chips, & Quantum Computing

Save this before your next Amazon loop.

Early in your career, the system design round tests whether you can think beyond your own code. At the senior level, it's often the round that determines the hire. The key is showing structured thinking and explaining every trade-off you make.

What if your work powered billions of requests a day?

At Annapurna Labs, software developers and hardware engineers co-design the custom chips behind AWS, Alexa, and Prime Video, from silicon to server to data center.

It's a team that runs on organized chaos, fast iteration, and the kind of collaboration that happens when hardware and software engineers sit side by side from day one.

You don't need a Ph.D. to build a career in data science, sometimes a different perspective is your biggest advantage.

Antonia studied business & communications before realizing she wanted to work in a more technology-focused, data-driven field. A master's in big data & business analytics led her to apply for an Amazon internship.

"I initially found it hard to secure a data science position because companies usually require a background in math or statistics. When I saw that Amazon was hiring interns in business intelligence data science, I applied right away," shares Antonia, a former AWS Data Science Intern.

#HereAtAWS, Antonia found the mentorship & support she needed to carve her own path.

"I found a mentor working in data science at Amazon, & my manager helped me to look out for the right opportunity within the business."

With their support, Antonia went on to help some of AWS's biggest customers accelerate the adoption of machine learning, from supporting public health organizations in their pandemic response to helping sports fans get closer to the action. Every challenge required a fresh approach.

"We're often applying new ideas, tools, & processes to problems that have never been solved before."
