In the spirit of loving and sharing this season, I have decided to share more about myself with my customers who have been nothing but amazing since this bakery started. Here are 5 totally random things about me;

I’m still trying to understand what life looks like without my mother in it. I thought I was getting better at handling this loss, but I’m still randomly catching myself thinking about her and how much I miss her and want her to be here.

With everything I do, my heart is still completely broken.

I’ve been seeing my mother in my sleep for a few days now and in my dreams, she’s not dead. She’s still so full of life and love. I’ll be holding on to that. Wept going through our conversations tho. I miss my parents so much ❤️. taken in Lagos, Nigeria by @hereislekan

I’ve been thinking about how quickly we expect people to return to the version of themselves that existed before a major loss.

Go back to work. Smile again. Don’t dwell on it. Be strong. Basically, return to the comfortability we were used to.

But here’s what I think about “moving on”: it assumes grief is a phase you pass through and eventually leave behind.

From what I’m learning, grief is hardly a phase. It’s something I’ll probably carry with me for the rest of my life, and I’m learning that that’s okay.

I’ll admit, I didn’t really understand this either until I became the person grieving. And maybe that’s why people who have known grief understand, better than most, how to simply sit with someone else’s pain without trying to rush them out of it.

We can do better as a society.

Let people grieve without putting a deadline on it.

It’s been a difficult couple of weeks, and I’m still learning how to live in a reality I never imagined. But I’m slowly finding my way through this new chapter.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out, prayed for me, and supported my family. Your kindness has meant more than words can express.

One of the hardest parts has been deciding when to return to baking.

My mum was the biggest supporter of @theoven.ng. She believed in me from the very beginning, encouraged me endlessly, and celebrated every step of this journey. So doing this without her in this world is not only gut-wrenching, it feels wrong too.

However, I’d like to think she’d want me to keep going and that’s what I’ll do.

With that said, The Oven NG is officially open again and ready to take your orders.

On July 12th, heaven gained an angel. I still can’t find the right words, so I put my heart into this song.
