Pride Plaza is looking better than ever.

Portland’s Pride Plaza, at SW 12th and Harvey Milk Street, was initially a temporary spot for patrons of surrounding businesses to gather outdoors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Federal investments, approved under the Biden administration, have allowed the plaza to become a permanent fixture.

On Saturday, the plaza celebrated what was described as a “grand reopening” to celebrate completed improvements.

There’s no better way to explore a new city than a walking tour, and no Oregon city celebrates theater quite like Ashland.

Created as a joint effort among several southern Oregon organizations, the Ashland Playwrights Walk currently spans roughly a mile across the city. Each stop on the map features a locally made plaque honoring playwrights throughout history.

The festival brought more than 100 vendors (80 food stalls and 20 selling merchandise or handmade goods), 200-plus Asian street food dishes, cultural performances and panda-themed attractions to Portland. Organizers expected around 10,000 attendees Saturday.

The food lineup offered dishes and desserts that aren’t always easy to find at a single Portland festival, from Japanese grilled squid and tanghulu, or candied fruit skewers, to dumplings, sushi and mochi desserts.

The festival continues Sunday.

Halloween’s already started. At least according to Spirit Halloween, the pop-up chain that each year temporarily possesses more than 1,500 vacant storefronts across the country.

This year, Spirit Halloween is haunting 25 different locations across Oregon.

As legend warns, speaking the name “Macbeth” inside a theater — in any context beyond what is strictly ordained in the script — is destined to bring disaster.

Ashland’s Shakespearean escape room — coyly called “The Scottish Play,” to avoid any verbal slips — borrows its lore from a 1937 production of “Macbeth” at London’s Old Vic theater, during which lead actor Laurence Olivier was nearly crushed by a fallen stage weight.

Presented by Escape Ashland and designed alongside the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s artistic team, “The Scottish Play” imagines its guests as a ragtag troupe of understudies.

On Monday morning, 26 drag queens showed up to set an "unofficial" world record for the most queens taking a hot air balloon ride at the same time.

Kelly Dorius, owner of Vista Balloon Adventures, says the idea came to her a couple years ago, after she met legendary Portland queen Poison Waters who took a hot air balloon ride in drag.

“And so I thought, why wouldn’t we just fill all the balloons with drag queens?” asked Dorius. “The beauty of balloons with the colors in the air and the beauties of drag with all their colors is a great combination.”

Ice Queen is a beloved vegan ice cream shop in Southeast Portland. Though best known for its paletas, it offers a delicious soft serve, too.

Throughout 2026 the dessert spot has been releasing monthly, themed treats, ranging from Heated Rivalry to Spongebob. For the month of August, Ice Queen announced four new specials inspired by the ’90s cartoon Rugrats.
