Death doulas are becoming an increasingly sought-after presence in end-of-life care.

“They’re able to provide whole-person support. They’re able to provide emotional, spiritual, practical, and logistical support in ways that medical staff often don’t have the bandwidth to do,” says Eva Ting , Founder & CEO of @heretohonor .

…and support from a death doula doesn’t have to begin only when death is imminent.

When asked when someone should consider hiring a death doula, Ting said:

“You can actually start earlier. The earlier you start is probably better because you have more time and more space to take care of things.”
A reminder that end-of-life care is also about preparation, compassion, and support through every stage. ✨

The presence of death doulas has become more and more prevalent — but what does the path to becoming one actually look like?

We asked certified death doula and Founder & CEO of @heretohonor , Eva Ting , that very question. 🤍

“There are a lot of different options out there—many different death doula trainings. There are organizations and associations that offer training, and you don’t have to want to become a professional to take part. You can actually do the training simply for your own education.”

As conversations around end-of-life care continue to grow, more people are seeking ways to better understand death, caregiving, and how to support others through it. ✨

You’ve likely heard of birth doulas… but what about death doulas?

Death doulas provide emotional support and advocacy for people at the end of their lives. 🤍

“The work they do actually has been around since the beginning of human history. We’ve been accompanying and supporting those who are dying since we got here,” says Eva Ting , Founder & CEO of @heretohonor

While this kind of care has always existed, conversations around end-of-life doulas and death education are becoming more visible than ever.

“There’s a movement that’s been happening— in the wake of a global pandemic that really revealed to us a lot of the brokenness a lot of the gaps in our healthcare and caregiving structures and we’re also an aging country—I think death doulas come in and step into this gap.”

A growing movement focused on compassion, dignity, and support at the end of life. ✨

✨Meet some of our speakers at Life & Death in NYC ✨
We are so honored and grateful to feature a fantastic lineup of presenters at our summit this year, all speaking into this theme of “Carry Each Other.” We invite you to get to know our presenters over the next few weeks…

Death may be seen as a great equalizer, but our experiences of dying and what happens afterward are not all the same: access to resources and financial means can shape these experiences. What happens to those who don’t have the resources, support, or choices many of us take for granted when it comes to end-of-life planning and after-death care?

Join Amy Shea (author of Too Poor to Die: The Hidden Realities of Dying in the Margins), Elsie Soto (Director of Friends of Hart Island and public health advocate), and end-of-life doula Emma Acker (All’s Well Initiative) as they discuss “End-of-Life Care at the Margins” and explore the realities faced by people who die while experiencing homelessness, poverty, or social isolation.

Register today! More info at lifeanddeathsummit.com or link in bio.

✨Meet our keynote panel speakers at Life & Death in NYC✨

We are excited for our morning keynote panel, who will be talking about “Holding Communal Space for Grief.”

Grief can feel deeply personal, but we were never meant to carry it alone. This panel explores how families, cultural traditions, and communities of care can help us walk alongside one another through loss. Panelists will consider how ritual, varying religious and cultural practices, and simply showing up can create meaningful spaces where grief is witnessed, honored, and shared.

Panel moderator Rev. Marisa Sifontes (St. James’ Church) will be in conversation with Ellie Ledin (Inheritance of Hope), Dr. Venus Mahmoodi (Columbia University Medical Center), and Rebecca Missel (Grief & Bereavement Specialist).

End-of-life planning can feel particularly daunting when faced with specialized or unfamiliar language and terms on medical forms or legal documents, and we may find ourselves unsure, confused, or overwhelmed. Where do we even start?

The roadblocks to getting end-of-life planning done are not merely logistical; they’re often emotional. And addressing end-of-life decisions can bring up some of life’s biggest questions and feelings....

It’s not often we get to enjoy a snack-themed Book Club gathering, but such was the case last night!

We had a lovely and lively discussion of “Aftertaste” by @daria.lavelle.author , talking about hungry ghosts, grief, and the role that food plays in memories. Paired with @reeses peanut butter cups in honor of one of the characters—but no spoilers here, you’ll have to read the book to find out more!

Thank you @neighbor.nyc for hosting us, as always ❤️
