First, in Istanbul, in late October. (That was the best one.) Then, in Austin TX (the COLDEST one!!) and San Francisco earlier this month.

One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been: the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach near Vik, Iceland. And, in the last weeks, storms have nearly destroyed it . . . the most of the sand replaced by stone, collapsed mountains, and it’s largely inaccessible now. Nature giveth and nature taketh away. It’s been nearly a decade since I was there, but I’m so glad I got a chance to explore it and have it almost entirely alone.

I, literally, remember nothing about that movie Jurassic Park, aside from a quote that’s something like: Nature finds a way. I hope one day nature can give it back or create something even more breathtaking.

Iceland really is the most magical place on Earth.

For weeks now, an unrelenting blanket of dense fog has hovered over the area. It’s gray and cold, and was pretty for the first few days, but that wore off fast. We miss the sun now.

Every single time I’ve looked at my backyard for the last three weeks, I’ve had one thought pop in my mind, actually one image: Taylor Swift’s “Folklore” album cover. One of my favorite images and it perfectly captures the album—the album that unexpectedly turned me into an unapologetic Swiftie.

So, with the hope that this fog might soon leave the area, I decided to re-create that album cover this morning in my backyard. Big hugs to my Hubbs for being such a great sport and photographer. I feel like it really captures the last few weeks. It can go now. (We, literally, drove up the mountain just to see the sky this morning. For those in Sac, it’s been sunny blue skies and t-shirt weather everyday in Placerville.)

I finally went on a bucket list hike last week to the abandoned Donner Summit Train Tunnels near North Take Tahoe.

These train tunnels were built by approximately 15,000 indentured Chinese immigrant workers in the late-1860s following the California Gold Rush and mass migration West. These tunnels are yet another reminder than this entire country was built by the sweat, tears, blood and lost lives of poor immigrants and slaves . . . and not that long ago.

The mountains were carved out by hand and by explosives. They go on for nearly 6 miles along the mountain ridges.

The train tunnels were used for more than 125 years before being disassembled and locked up in 1993.

Today, you can hike through them. It’s part history/part modern art gallery. Total eye candy. Definitely spooky sometimes, because long sections are pitch black and full of bats. And, the view between the tunnels over the Sierra Nevada valley and Lake Donner is spectacular. There’s also a place across the street with pie.

One week ago today, I was completely losing my shit at the IDLES Block Party in Bristol. It went so fast. A weekend has never gone so fast.

It was a total Pinch-Me Week: First, Oasis, at Wembley, then two days later, a weekend in Bristol with two nights of IDLES, Soft Play, Lambrini Girls, and so many more. And, the beautiful humans of AF Gang from all over the world. The music at both the festival and the two nights of afterparties was incredible, but re-connecting with and meeting so many other IDLES fans and genuinely fun, kind, interesting people was my favorite part.

And, Bristol, what a dope city! I don’t know why, but the UK fits me like a glove. Every single time I’m in the UK, I feel like it’s where I should’ve been born. Definitely the best music scene on the planet, with Ireland being a very very close second.

My heart is full of GRATITUDE—even if @idlesband didn’t play Meydei. (I’m not losing hope.)

I haven’t just been waiting a year for this, I’ve been dreaming about this for 30 years.

A few years ago, I flew to the UK to see @liamgallagher perform solo in Cardiff. It’s been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember to see @oasis in the UK and, back in 2022, the chances of a reunion were looking slim. Thankfully, Liam was still keeping the Oasis torch burning, and as I stood at the barrier, in front of the stage, with 20,000 other fans, I thought “this is as close as I’ll ever get.” And, I was blissfully happy. It was an absolutely amazing night. (For the record, I also think Liam Gallagher’s solo music is great. Mad fer it, Liam.)

And, then, it happened: The reunion tour was announced last summer. Obviously, I had to go and I knew had to get myself to one of the UK shows—because I don’t trust American audiences to rise to the occasion. When you’ve been dreaming about something for 30 years, you want the real thing. You wanna be surrounded by 90,000 other mega-fans who know every single word to every single song, just like you do. Not just Wonderwall.

It was one of the best nights of my life and that’s not an over-exaggeration. The spirit of community in that stadium was overwhelming. It wasn’t just that every single one of us were singing in unison—but, the sound of 90,000 singing in perfect unison is insane. It was the constant flow of tears from ALL of us. It was strangers giving each other hugs and swaying with arms wrapped around one another. It was staring at the stage with an ear-to-ear smile, because you can’t even wrap your head around what you’re feeling. It was being in Front Standing, with all the other diehards, during the Poznan 🤣 It was even the copious amounts of beer flying through the air in celebration that somehow made the whole thing more festive. July 30, 2025 was a fucking religious experience.

@themightyi once said: “People never forget the way you made them feel.” I’ll never forget.

Okinawa. Kyoto. Osaka. Mt Fuji. Tokyo.

Real talk: Japan didn’t live up to my expectations and it’s probably my fault. Maybe that’s because I had built it up so much. Maybe it’s because my expectations were misguided in the first place—never trust social media. (Even what I’m writing now is going to be completely disagreed with by many. It’s all subjective.) Maybe it was because the weather wasn’t the best; although, we tried not to let it stop us. Maybe it was because it was so insanely crowded; although, we went off-season in hopes it wouldn’t be too bad. (Spoiler: IT’S NUTS. Even off-season.) Maybe it’s because we only went to tourist-heavy places. But, I’ve certainly enjoyed other tourist-heavy places before. Even other large tourist-heavy cities before, like Hong Kong, Bangkok, Hanoi, Seoul, London, Barcelona, Istanbul. Love them. Heck, I love The Blue Lagoon in Iceland and that’s THE MOST TOURISTY place ever.

Maybe it’s because I’m comparing it too much, which is a pitfall of traveling a lot.

Comparisons are inevitable, try as I might to be open to a place on its own terms. But, as a person who absolutely loves Asia, has been to 12 Asian countries, and briefly lived in one (China), I just didn’t get swept up the way I normally do. It felt a bit stoic and fatigued: the opposite of everything I’ve ever felt in most other Asian countries. Frankly, I felt the same energy as the U.S., which is that soulless, rat-race energy we have here. Maybe Japan felt too much like the U.S. to me—even with all the beautiful shrines, neon, and crazy outfits. It’s hard to articulate.

That said, there were some absolutely wonderful moments and cool places, and I want to go back, but I want to go waaaaayyyy off the beaten path. No big cities, no major tourist attractions, more time in nature, more immersive. (Suggestions if you got them!) So many people fall in love with Japan. I want to, too.

A post from some wanna-be “travel influencers” bad-mouthing Vietnam just popped up on my feed. They used the word “scam” when, really, the post highlighted their own naivety and lack of travel experience more than anything else. But, playing victim sells, I guess. (If you are reading this: You have to pay for things inside stores, too. Such a “scam.”)

I read a lot about “scams” before my trip to Vietnam. And, aggressive taxi drivers. And, theft. And, of course, I stocked up on belly-meds, because everyone warned me how the food or water would inevitably make me sick. Lots of other warnings too.

But, none of it came to be. (Vietnam is one of the very very few countries I didn’t get sick in 🤣)

The country was beautiful, fun, wildly-diverse, inexpensive, and easy to move around in. It felt very safe. The food—and COFFEE—was DELICIOUS!!! (Seriously, I’ve been home a few days now and miss it so much.) And, everyone we met was incredibly friendly, proud of their country, and helpful. And, honest. (So honest, in fact, that when a housekeeper found that we had accidentally left money in our room, they turned it into the front desk for us to collect when we came back for our bags.)

I look forward to going back and miss it already. With any luck, the very traumatized wanna-be bloggers will never go back.
