Introducing the Heritage Salon Legacy Giving Circle. For years, Heritage Salon has championed Black museums, historic homes, and historic sites. Now, we’re moving from advocacy to action—collective action rooted in the legacy of Black club women who organized boldly and gave with purpose.

This women-led circle (with support from dedicated men as well) is committed to strengthening small and mid‑sized Black museums and historic spaces that often operate with limited resources. Guided by preservation, integrity, excellence, connection, and responsibility, we’re pooling our power to protect Black history and ensure these stories thrive for generations.

Led by Founder Jada Wright-Greene @jadawgreene and Founding Members, Dr. Tara White @curator_tw & Dr. Ashley Preston @thelegacykeeper , we’re joining together to create impact, change, and sustainability.

We are ecstatic to partner with the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro @communityfoundationgso to administer our funds and support from Philanthropy Together @philanthropytogether to begin this great work!

Born enslaved, she walked 1,700 miles to the West, raised three daughters on the trail where she was responsible for setting up and breaking camp; cooking the meals; herding cattle; and serving as a midwife. She went on to fight for her freedom in court and won. In Los Angeles, she built community, founded the First A.M.E. Church, purchased land in what’s now downtown L.A., and used her wealth to feed families, shelter the unhoused, support prisoners, and uplift Black children.

With her estimated wealth of $3 million, Mason became a philanthropist to the Los Angeles community. Bridget “Biddy” Mason died in L.A. on January 15, 1891, and was buried in an unmarked grave. Today the Biddy Mason Memorial Park is located at 333 S. Spring Street which features a centerpiece that is an 80-foot-long poured concrete wall reflecting her life.

Philanthropist Marjorie Stewart Joyner, was a brilliant inventor, beauty pioneer, and one of the first Black women to receive a patent. She created the permanent wave machine — inspired by pot‑roast rods in her own kitchen — a device that transformed hairstyling by allowing multiple rollers to be used at once, cutting the time needed to create curls and waves.

Joyner graduated from the A.B. Moler Beauty School, opened her own salon, and later joined forces with Madam
C. J. Walker as a teacher and national supervisor for Walker
Beauty Schools.

She didn’t stop there….she was one of the co-founders of the National Council of Negro Women and the United Beauty School Owners & Teachers Association, as well as organizer of the Alpha Chi Phi Omega fraternity and sorority dedicated to advancement and promotion of beauty and wellness.

As a philanthropist she donated funds for Bethune‑Cookman College in various areas but most importantly for the erection of a dorm which was named in her honor. At the age of 77 she earned a degree in Psychology from Bethune-Cookman College. Joyner reminds us that we can lead with community, creativity and legacy.

Since 2009, Heritage Salon has been a home for museums, historic sites, historic homes, and cultural institutions committed to preserving Black history. We’ve grown from a blog to a magazine, to a nonprofit, to a platform that sparks national conversations and action.

Now, we’re entering a new chapter—one focused on deeper support, stronger partnerships, and meaningful intentional change.

Over the next three weeks, we’ll be sharing the next leg of our journey. The work ahead is bold, necessary, and rooted in community. We can’t wait for you to be part of it.
